An art competition was held in Jason's school. He decided to take part in it/the competition.
Should I use 'it' or 'the competition'? To my non-native ear, ending the sentence with 'it' doesn't sound correct.
Can the second sentence be "He decided to take part." (the other word/s removed)?
Many thanks in advance.

Yes, or you could say, and this is what I would write:
An art competition was held in Jason's school. He decided to participate.

Thanks, Aidan.

If I wanted to use an object, would it be 'it' or 'the competition'?
Many thanks in advance.
@tanguatlay,
I would use 'it' if I had to use one or the other of those two choices. You could also say 'the competition' and technically it would be correct, but it sounds redundant.
@tanguatlay,
You're welcome tanguatlay.
