Does Your Sleeping Position Reveal Your Personality?

CHICAGO -- A British researcher claims that the way you sleep can reveal your personality. The study compared sleep positions and dominant personalities, according to NBC5, and arrived at the following conclusions:

People who sleep in a fetal position, as most women do, tend to be shy and sensitive.

Those who prefer the starfish position -- sleeping on their sides with arms down -- are usually good listeners, easy-going, and able to make friends easily.

The freefaller position, with arms outstretched, usually means the person is brash and outgoing.

The rarest group are those who sleep in the soldier position -- flat on their stomachs, with hands near their heads. Such sleepers usually set high standards for themselves.

A person who sleeps in a log position -- on the side, with legs outstretched and arms at the sides -- is relaxed and social.

The yearner sleeps like a log but with arms raised instead of at the side; such a sleeper is suspicious and cynical.

I can now blame my shyness on how I sleep, who'd a thunk. So if I just roll over...

I sleep on my sides with my arms close to my head, but will be on my back when I wake up in the morning. It usually takes me about five minutes to hit sheep land, and I forget most of my dreams. Wink

Generally on my side or stomach. I read an article that said if your bed faces vertically north and south that you will sleep your best.

i sleep wherever and however the dogs let me. usually that means on my side, since it takes up less space - leaves more room for them.

Now if I may insert a thought here. How you sleep also has serious repercussions on your health. It's a matter of fundamental posture. Let's face it, sleeping is the longest continual activity we engage in. To boot, in the state of sleep, all our muscles go fairly loose and it is up to our integument, bone and ligaments, to 'keep our form'...

Those that sleep on belly will generally not help the health of their backs as it caves in their lower spine. This deforms the spine over time and also does no great service to the greater mass of organs, which are located from the chest down. It also is not so great for regular respiration and the heart functions... too much direct pressure.

A healthy sleeping posture (and no, I don't necessarily always sleep this way) is flat on your back. Keeps the back straight and places no undue pressure on the main organs. It's good for the heart, stomach and main digestives.

On your side is fine, for many of the reasons expressed above, not the least eh beth's (how can we 'make spoons' any other way), but in the end, it seems that flat on back sleeping is the best approach. I know I sleep best when I go there.

I get this from Taoist thought, but I've heard it confirmed among Western therapists. It makes great sense if you explore it.

I can confirm the back-sleeping thing from toddler observation. If she falls asleep flat on her back, I clomp around and don't worry about her waking up, as I know she's in a deeeeep sleep.

My aunt is a chiro and I remember her telling me that if your back is good, sleeping on your stomach is best. If your back is in spasm or has problems, sleeping on your back is best. I dunno. When my tummy's upset or I have cramps, or my back is tired I sleep on my belly and I feel good.

Little K. That's the real truth of it I think. It's a day to day kind of adjustment. It's like Mr. Chan (my old tai ch'i teacher) always said to me: listen to your body, don't argue with it.

And when your body tells you to go see a doctor, go see a doctor without delay. Wink

But if the doctor doesn't seem to care about what you're telling him... find one who does.

C.I. (Do we get a personality analysis?) Rarely. What I find interesting about this kind of topic is how something so personal (sleep position) gets generalized. The medical profession always seems ready to come up with a rule, as do various 'alternative' medicines.

Let me relate something of interest, at least to me: Now for several years I have noticed a difficulty in sleeping relating to the soles of my feet. I have had trouble sleeping without the soles being sufficiently cool. I often feel the need to place the soles of my feet against something cool before I can get down into a soft easy sleep. Of course wondered about this.

Now, apparently, a different item. My eyes are failing. I have been reading endless literature on the subject of the kind of eyesight failure I suffer. At some point I find a medical article about 'sole of foot discomfort' in getting to sleep. I read on. The thought is that if the brain has difficulty fixing iron, this condition arises. Particularly effected are the nerve cells of the optical system. I begin a regimen of iron intake. My eyes improve. I submit to a treatment involving iron nutrient to the brain. The eyes improve. I continue on with a more focussed regimen of iron/eye nutrient: the eyes improve.

No Doctor (because it doesn't impact him/her) would get me to the place I am: improved eyes. The impetus must come from the individual. Knowledge is power, nah?

But, for me, it all circles back to Chan, who told me: Pay attention to what your body is telling you.
