"Complex" motor movements are multi-muscle movements such as putting a key in your car door, pointing and shooting a gun, and just about every martial art move taught in today's dojos"like reverse punches, front kicks, wrist locks, arm bars, hip throws, etc.
"Gross" motor movements, on the other hand, are movements you can do without even thinking"like running, charging, raising your arm above your head or lifting your heels off the ground.
This was a HUGE revelation that "mainstream" self defence schools"even 80 years later"still have not "got" yet. (And those who do will NEVER admit it. Because let's face it, they would be out of business tomorrow if their students knew how useless all those "flashy" kicks and punches really are.)
1. Is 'etc' needed?
2. Why is the last word 'are' and not 'were' when the preceding words in the sentence are 'would' and 'knew'?
Thanks.
@tanguatlay,
'etc' is simply a choice made by the speaker/writer.

Think for a moment, what the sentence would say if 'were' was substituted for 'are', T.
What does this
"they would be out of business tomorrow if their students knew"
actually say, ie. what is the opposing reality?
Hi JTT
I conclude that you are telling that I should use 'are' - the opposing reality.
