Pyrotechnics

My fiance would love to get into Pyrotechnics in the film industry, special effects etc. He developed an interest in it working as security on the set of Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers.

I know there are many courses to do which would facilitate the start of a career in this industry, most of which begin with fireworks etc, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience in this industry and has any tips or advice.
