It looks like it will rain soon.
It looks as if it will rain soon.

I remember reading that the first sentence with 'like' is AmE, while the second with 'as if' is BrE.

Do native speakers have the same view?

Yes, and in fact, I'd be more likely to say simply - 'Looks like rain' -meaning that it looks like it will rain soon.

Here in Britain, the phrases are interchangeable (in spoken English), though the second is more grammatical (for written English).

But I think in writing that, I'm being a bit "picky".
