Waiting for us outside the test room stood Mr. Hung, our Team Trainer. In front of the man who had high expectations of me, I uttered the pronouncement of failing with a sense of finality. I had never before let Mr. Hung down. However, over-confidence and complacence caused me to make careless mistakes in the problems and caused our team to subsequently lose to the other team.
Is the clause in bold correctly used? If so, could you explain to me in simple words its meaning. Are there any errors in the sentences?
Many thanks.
@tanguatlay,
I don't think it was "correctly" used. I should think that you would have a better idea of its meaning. Didn't you write it?
However - Mr Hung is the team trainer. His job title does not require initial capital letters. There is no such word as "complacence". Perhaps complacency was intended. The mistakes were surely made in the answers to the problems. Whatever happened in the room sounds more like a tournament or competition than a test.
