@chai2,
The same reason they slid by with what a vector was. (I was in a class of 200, and only 3 of us had never had physics before).
I didn't do well. What?
Years later I think I might enjoy learning physics.

My bugbear was greater than and less than signs when I was 7 or 8 - took me ages to stop worrying about which way they were pointing without looking at the numbers.

That's so funny.
I've known a lot of people who have a problem with the > and the < signs.

Never bothered me, it just seemed obvious one was pointing down the number line, the other, up.

One roommate of mine, a nurse, told me she thought of it as fishes mouths, and the > fish was eating all the small numbers, leaving the bigger ones behind, and vice-versa.

I was like "are you serious?" Neutral

Another nurse, my old boss, would actually call me into her office when she was working on financials, and ask me which one she should use.

I more than once said to her "You're a nurse, they use those signs all the time in scripts and treatments and documentation. How can you have a problem with that? It would really make me worry if you were giving me medications."

WTF, over?

I told her about the fishes, and that seemed to, disturbingly enough, make sense to her.

I dunno why you have a problem with that, chai. The fishes analogy makes perfectly good sense to me.

I'd say that you are older than Anderson Cooper but still under 55.

@chai2,
In grade school (3rd grade?) I was taught that analogy, except it was a duck. The duck always wants to eat the bigger number.

@chai2,
When I dropped out of uni a got a job as a process worker in a local factory in the wood machine shop (was actually precomp and ligno - much denser than wood) making the internals of power transformers.
One day 5 guys were holding a diagram that came with a custom piece of ligno imported from Germany.

I got called over - with 'You went to university, what does this mean?'

The drawing had a picture of the block with what had to be made out of the block (it was sort of a parallelogram shaped widget).

The formula said

N x Z http://www.w3.org/TR/MathML2/glyphs/000/U0003E-020D2.png L

L was the length of ligno. Z was the length of the widget and N was the number of widgets.

So basically was saying you can't cut more widgets out of this ligno than will fit in it.

Yeah, but I don't get that sign, the slash through the >...new to me.

Or maybe I do get it.

@ossobuco,
It's a 'not greater than' sign - I gave up trying to find it in UTF-8 to copy and paste and used an image instead - tough to line it up with text though.

I'm all like "yeah hingey, that makes sense."

In fact, I'm going to use every opportunity to use that in my real life. As in," we have to leave in 49 minutes, so you do not have time to watch the 2nd part of the LOTR's again, even fast forwarding past all the Gollum scenes."
