@izzythepush,
Exactly. If you type 1/2 in excel, it assumes it is a date. US Excel would say January 2nd.

@roger,
A half is written 1/2 which would also be a date, which would be 2nd January the US way or 1st February for everyone else.

I can't make it any simpler.

And it's one and tuppence in old money.

@izzythepush,
In Canada, both are used, which makes it awfully confusing. The UK says the the first of February when speaking, which is why it's 1/2... In North America we usually say January 2nd, which is why it's 1/2. However, some government departments use one way, and others use the other. I wish they'd make up their minds. The only clear dates are ones over 12 (Dec 13, etc). If your birthday is 1/2, it could be either!

@Mame,
Every form I've ever had to fill out is dmy, the only time I encounter mdy is online.

It seems logical to go small and work up, with dmy there's a progression.

Not so much with mdy, you end up going back on yourself half way through.

And for all that American don't say July the fourth.

@izzythepush,
Some forms here start with the year. It's all over the bleeding map. Maybe the Fourth of July is a holdover from when they declared Independence and still a little under British influence? That's probably the only date they say that way.

Excel treats fractions that can be used as dates, e.g. 1/2 as dates in the default Number setting "General," and will show as "2-Jan" after you press the Enter key. You have to switch to another Number setting, like "Text" to keep it as 1/2.

It also switches the Number setting to "Custom" after pressing the Enter key.

@izzythepush,
I tend to use YYYY-MM-DD in a lot of my work - ISO saves confusion (unless you're dealing with someone who doesn't think ISO).

@hingehead,
That makes sense too, it's a progress in one direction.

Although Star Wars does bow to the American usage.

@izzythepush,
Nobody interested in my old money comment?

I don't blame you, it's not worth it.

@hingehead,
The \ was a symbol for shillings back in the day.
