I have been interested in martial arts since I was young.
I have been interested in martial art since young.

Should it be 'martial art' or 'martial arts'?
Is 'I was' optional?

Thanks in advance.

@JTT,
Many thanks, JTT.

By the way, what does the purple pattern next to JTT represent? I notice every member has one beside their username.

Thanks again.
