@RexRed,
Quote:
Same-sex married couples, for instance, can’t file joint federal returns, which have the effect of lowering taxes, because the Internal Revenue Service defines a marriage for federal tax purposes as “only a legal union between a man and a woman as husband and wife.”

There are such things as White Marriages. Thus two men can apply to be legally married without any intention of having sex together or even of living together and get their tax liabilities reduced. Which is to say having it off at the expense of the rest.

Marriage as financial strategy. Sanctity leached out and thus the point of the ceremony is lost.

Is there a divorce rate yet for the same sex couples who got "married" before Prop 8? Or a breakdown rate?

@spendius,
Many heterosexual couples do not have sex, and still file a joint return.

@cicerone imposter,
"Having it off" is an expression we use to denote screwing everybody else in the vicinity. It is not necessarily connoted with sex though it may be on occasions.

Your total concept is off by 180 degrees whether it's about sex or not.

We have discovered a tax reduction incentive.

What a surprise eh?

@RexRed,
I thought her saying that her daughter had come out of the closet was a rather unfortunate way of expressing her emotional thoughts.

I hope legislation isn't proceeding on the basis of a daughter's personal experiences. I had a sense that if her daughter had never been in the closet or had never come out of it the lady would be taking a different view.

It was embarrassing really. Any actress could have performed the routine.

Spendius, don't project your own weak and fear ridden phobias into someone else's intentions. Your hate has blinded you from the ability to read a healthy response to a person's liberty and thus rendered your opinion biased and unscrupulous. If you feel embarrassment, rightly so, it is your own.

@RexRed,
I suspect everybody's intentions who gets up on a public platform and starts spouting. Even my own.

And the more experience they have of the activity the stronger my suspicions become. Milking the udder of human kindness is the easiest way of getting on in life. Farmers and engineers are the kindest groups of people there ever can be. Others are creaming increments of their efforts off for their own use.

I'm not about to start believing every emotional rant I witness.

And don't talk to me about liberty because I have been on active service to defend ours. And had one uncle killed, one vanished and one crippled for life defending our liberties. That sort of cheap talk makes me sick and it should make everybody else sick too. Waving Liberty about so you can get married to some bloke.

Marriage was invented to deal with womanhood. Monogamy was invented to share out the burden equally. Chastity was invented to ensure that sex had that burden to deal with as its price.

And any lady is perfectly entitled to present the corollary but only if she forgets that women are more difficult to deal with than men. Which no real Lady would ever dream of doing what with men being, in the words of Germaine Greer, like carrots: cheap and plentiful and easily cooked.

So you want to be married without this burden. A get rich quick scheme it seems to me. Posturing with peeled onion in hand.

So what? I think that this is a good thing.

That a personal experience can make a person overcome their own prejudices is a very great thing. She even said that she thought she'd agonize over it, but found that she wasn't. This is informative to many who may feel the same.

Eventually even the GOP will get on board with equal rights for LGBT people. Right now it's politically correct for Republicans to be against gay rights.

Making a baby can take some men and woman under a minute, staying in a loving and committed relationship takes a lifetime. Just like liberty is a life long pursuit and not just a few meaningless words without the heart and actions to back them up. Marriage is about love and not sex, I find it quite shallow of you to think otherwise.

The christian bible talks about birth control... Most people do not realize this. That is because they do not read the bible but they read around the bible, they read what others say about the bible and not the bible itself.

The Bible says that "God would have all men (people) to be born again..."

As if being born once is not enough... So we have evangelists traveling the country leading people into this "new birth". I liken this to the old west where there were bandits running from town to town fathering bastard children.

Had the evangelists read the second half of the scripture where is says, "and come unto a knowledge of the truth." we might see the whole picture of marriage and love.

So the bible exhorts people to not just be born again but to ALSO be nurtured in a loving household with the aim of reaching spiritual adulthood. Sadly the republican party who seem, for the most part, to wear their christianity like a cloak demonstrate this depravity of truth quite remarkably.

Is this what modern marriage has become where heterosexuals make babies and leave them for gay couples to actually love them and raise them into kind-hearted and caring human beings?

What is harder, making the babies or staying around to raise them? And are we going to in our "progressive" society favor the baby makers over the households and families that have devoted many years to the nurture and loving commitment required to bring these children up to a "knowledge of the truth?" God forbid...

1 Timothy 2:4
Who will have all men [people] to be saved [born again], and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Enlighten me fa. I'm a willing learner.

Simply asserting that I know nothing about a subject does nothing for me and I hope does nothing for anybody else.

spendi, You've never been a "willing learner." As almost everyone on a2k knows, you repeat the same, tired, beliefs that you have learned from your daily visit to the pub.

@cicerone imposter,
It's better than making daily visits to the newspaper shop and the travel agents.

You enlighten me then. fa has not yet done. I thought LGBT had nothing to do with anything other than sex. Using the word "sex" colloquially rather than scientifically of course.

Despite your silly remark, which betrays you becoming stumped, again, I am a very willing learner. Asserting that I'm not a willing learner is not a satisfactory excuse for failing to enlighten me when I have specifically requested that I be enlightened. It's too convenient. It's a verbal bushwhacking actually.

I'm all eyes on this as I'm sure others are. fa said the LGBT and sex were two topics. Not connected I take it. LGBT is a wide ranging concept as far as I know. It has wings like all parties. Some homosexuals reject the whole notion and one wing rejects the notions of the other. There are factions. What else is there to know about it?

Sex I know enough about to be able to define it scientifically.
