LABOR has given a strong indication same-sex marriage will be legalised, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's righthand man declaring the party will make it happen.

Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the declaration while being interviewed on a youth radio station.

But Mr Albanese later sought to clarify his comment, saying the issue was still a matter for a conscience vote and that history showed the Labor side of politics had always been the one to reform gay and lesbian rights.

His comments came after Mr Rudd last week declared he would hold a plebiscite or a national referendum on the issue if Opposition Leader Tony Abbott did not allow a conscience vote for Coalition MPs.

Asked on Triple J's Hack show if Labor would make gay marriage happen, Mr Albanese, restricted to one-word answers, said: "Yes".

Mr Albanese later told News Limited: "While marriage equality is a matter for a conscience vote, history has shown that the removal of discrimination in Australia has been led by Labor.

"After the election the Liberal and National parties should also allow its members the right of a conscience vote on this important issue."

@RexRed,
Rex I know that you have been able to see my ignorance and I can only guess that is why you do not reply at times. I seen this video of Fr. Thomas Doyle and he seems to side with you on all issues or at least many.

I think you may be catholic and if so I would like to hear your input in this thread.

Only moments ago the UK's House of Commons approved the amendments to the Same Sex Marriage Bill made by the House of Lords. Same sex marriage has passed the UK Government and will now be legal for citizens of England and Wales!

@RexRed,
Why is it that one only hears about sexual abuse in relation to the Roman Catholics? Could it be that the money is better when you sue a 1 billion member church than a 650 member protestant church? Or is it only catholics who are sexual abusers?

@RABEL222,
Sexual abuse is wide spread among all groups. I think that Catholics can handle it better so we target them the most. Laughing
I think that we would be better served if we addressed all abuses.

@RABEL222,
Because only the Catholic Church enforces celibacy on its priests, creating the double edged sword of warping those with normal sexual drives and offering a mask to those with abnormal sexual drives.

Child abuse is certainly not restricted to Catholics, or even religious orders, but the structure and strictures of the catholic priesthood over 2000 years have made much more statistically likely to occur under their watch.
