When the Spanish-American War started, Theodore Roosevelt found volunteers to create the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. The newspapers called them the "Rough Riders."

Is that possible today - can one form a volunteer unit of the army and I think appoint one self as colonel of it? Or is there more to the story or the practice?

@gollum,
It is my understanding that the constitution only allows for the federal government and the state to raise volunteer military. Something about "posse comitatus" seems to be in the back of my brain somewhere but you can probably goggle it as well as I can.
