It is/was only the second class he has taught so he does not know yet whether he enjoys teaching.

Which verb should I use?

Many thanks.

@tanguatlay,
Either, depending on context.

@contrex,
Expanding on contrex's reply, I would use "was" if "the second class" refers to a
single session in th past. I would use "is" if "the second class" refers to a
continuing series.

@George,
Important point, George. Something that Tanguatlay should take to heart. Much, much depends upon the speaker's focus.
