I knew there was a reason she kept shuffling thru her flash cards while Biden was talking.

@Centroles,
The best one I've heard so far is that she doesn't understand the question. Even in high school, a student who participates in a debate knows they just can't ignore the question posed; if they do, they lose.

Conservatives don't seem to have any problem with her "depth of knowledge" about national and international topics. That tells me more about the conservatives than about Palin.

@Centroles,
Besides the fact that she kept winking like Capt Queeg, I found the most annoying thing about her was her constant looking down reading , READING HER DEBATE!!>
The fact that she didnt implode was due, in part to the sound byte format and her thick pile of cue cards.

@farmerman,
Biden did the same thing a few times, but you probably missed that with your blind eye.

@Centroles,
There must've been a card that said, "Drop the g from every word ending with -ing."

I got so sick of her folksy-isms. All that, "you betcha! I'm talkin' about Joe Six Pack, blah blah blah..." It was annoying.

She packages herself as being hostile to intellectualism, ala Paris Hilton. The question is what does it mean that a sizable chunk of the citizenry buys into this shtick when a VP nominee uses it?? I think that it is clear evidence of the fall of the American empire...

I am less interested in whether she really is as dumb as she acts, and just as some friends of Paris's claim that she is not, some in Palin's circle claim that Palin in not. In both cases there is no evidence that they are any more bright than they act. They both take the lemons that are their lack of intellectual capacity and attempt to make lemonaid of it, they both get an A for gumption.

@DontTreadOnMe,
If Palin doesn't understand the power of the vice-president, how can the American people believe she understands the power of the president? A Queen Palin?

@DontTreadOnMe,
Right, Paris is good fun and I don't begrudge her earning a pretty good living by being a bimbette, I kinda respect her for doing so well with so little. I am however offended that Palin wants to be one and VP at the same time.

It is very clear that Palin see no difference between the personal and the public...she will certainly be "Queen Palin"

@McGentrix,
Biden did refer to his notes periodically, but not to half the extent that Palin did. Without her cues she would have floundered more than those 2 times when she started talking in circles, and when she answered the question re: the increased power assumed by the VEEP Cheney. She was in total agreement. Bisen put her straight as to what the VEEP actually does, since Biden teaxhes Constitutional LAw at Widener and Penn LAw schools.

Anyway, Biden is more "of the people" than Palin or McCain, his handling of Bimbettes answer about "Wasslila main stree" is such bullshit. ANybody that knows about Biden knows his availablity and his riding the train to DC from Wilmington Gel, every day that the Congress is in session. Ive seen him on the ACela several times when I hadda go to DC, he was always willing to talk and discuss issues. Hes a smart guy. Palin isnt that bright. Her college performance isnt quite as bad as McCains but its pretty mediocre.

@farmerman,
farmerman, You call it "pretty mediocre," and I call it non-existent. When you can't answer a question, then changes subject, that's not even in the ball park, and you're out! Why go "at bat" without even knowing what a bat is?

Both Republican candidates are dumber than posts and yet they have a pretty good chance of being elected. It is after all, the United States of America.

Anti-intellectualism has a rich tradition here. I recommend this book as essential reading on the subject...

Bush, of course, packaged himself (or was packaged by his handlers) in the same manner. Reagan as well. In all three cases, this arose partly out of necessity. Incurious, poorly-read candidates simply cannot long make a credible pretense of being other than what they are, except for an audience who are like them.

But also, this is a purposeful strategy to appeal to old and persistent anti-intellectual populist ideas afloat in the culture and all the folks who hold them...the "base". Notice how Obama's achievements at Harvard, for example, are spoken of derisively by rightwing radio or by Fox or by McCain surrogates.

@blatham,
Can't be called anything else when so may in the crowds Palin appeals to seem clueless as to facts, and buy into her lies and innuendos. I believe "Joe sixpack" identifies them well.

So I guess we're not going to argue this election on the basis of the issues, just character assasination. Can you tell me any more about her daughter's sex life?

Palin is now saying that "Obama is a friend to terrorists." This is what happens when you put a neophyte into national politics who's been treated like the queen of sheba for too long.

Quote:
Analysis: Palin's words may backfire on McCain

By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press Writer 51 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - By claiming that Democrat Barack Obama is "palling around with terrorists" and doesn't see the U.S. like other Americans, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin targeted key goals for a faltering campaign.

And though she may have scored a political hit each time, her attack was unsubstantiated and carried a racially tinged subtext that John McCain himself may come to regret.

First, Palin's attack shows that her energetic debate with rival Joe Biden may be just the beginning, not the end, of a sharpened role in the battle to win the presidency.

"Our opponent ... is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," Palin told a group of donors in Englewood, Colo. A deliberate attempt to smear Obama, McCain's ticket-mate echoed the line at three separate events Saturday.

@blatham,
Blotham---Did you ever read the book? I doubt it. Richard Hofstadter ( P. 428 wrote:

"The situation of men of real intellectual accomplishment who may also enter the service of power is muuch more complicated...whether one is to sacrifice some of one's own range of critical freedom in the hope that power may be made more amenable to the councils of intellect>''

I really don't think you have understoodHofstadter!

@Buffalo,
Oh, Buffalo, I really don't think so. Almost all the polls, even Republican ones show Obama ahead. Some show he has enough Electoral Votes already even without the leaners.
