@realjohnboy,
McCain's trotting out the usual conservative "trickle down" theory.

The problem is nothing ever trickles down.

The replies to the "lessons of Iraq" are very interesting! Obama makes a lot more sense. McCain seems to be just talking populist jargon.

@DontTreadOnMe,
McCain gave up all riht to talks about his time as a POW when he refused to let it be the subject of discussion. Given his propensity to lie, why would anyone take him at his word as to what happened in Vietnam?

@squinney,
I was watching the little audience approval lines scroll across the screen when he said that. It plummeted. I think calling yourself a maverick twice in a row violates some law of self promotion.

Now, after about 30 minutes of McCain making an excellent case for himself remaining in the Senate (to combat spending, he's done it! he knows how to do it!), he finally appears in his comfort zone. He managed to goad Obama into responding to that ridiculous jab about the difference between a tactic and a strategy. But Obama still looks better to me. McCain keeps doing this little smirky laugh thing that comes across to me as dismissive. Obama has, for the most part, gotten a handle on the relentless pausing that used to make me cringe in his debates with Hillary. He seems a lot more at ease arguing with McCain.

I really like Lehrer. He's doing a bang-up job.

What is also interesting in watching the little fan-o-meter at the bottom of the screen is noticing where one party or another is out of touch with everyone else. On the health care stuff, you could see where indys and Dems were in agreement and the Republicans were still flying high on their lonesome free market approach magic carpet. The only people who seem to have much of an opinion at all are the indys. Their line is the only one that moves that much.

I am growing very weary of McCain talking constantly about his "record" of being in every single trouble-spot ... generally well before it became really important! Laughing

Those punches landed. Following our enemies into Pakistan does make sense. Obama's failed to effectively pound in Iraq as a $600 Billion Dollar mistake. "I ask the American Tax Payers... all 150 million of you... Would you have preferred a check for $4,000 each?"

Ooh... McCain's temper is flaring a bit...
