2008: The ISSUES and the CANDIDATES

The election is only seven weeks from now. Many of us are jumping from thread to thread and our discussions are disjointed and splattered throughout the forum. Let's discuss both the issues and the candidates in a centralized location.

ISSUE: The Economic Meltdown--GOLDEN PARACHUTES

CANDIDATE MCCAIN:

"We are going to reform the way Wall Street does business and put an end to the greed that has driven our markets into chaos," McCain said. "We will stop multimillion dollar payouts to CEO’s who have broken the public trust."

"John McCain and I we're going to put an end to the mismanagement and abuses and on Wall Street that have resulted in this financial crisis," Palin said Monday. "We are going to reform the way Wall Street does business and stop multi-million dollar payouts and golden parachutes to CEOs who break the public trust."

The McCain campaign was asked by ABC News to clarify what a McCain administration would do to "stop multimillion dollar payouts" to CEOs. What he supports is making sure that shareholders can vote on CEO compensation, right now he's saying they don't," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers told ABC News.

McCain's top economics adviser Carly Fiorina, a McCain campaign surrogate who made the rounds on the Sunday morning talk shows this past weekend and appeared on CNN Monday speaking for McCain, herself benefited from a multimillion dollar payout.

Fiorina was dismissed as the CEO of Hewlett Packard in 2005 after a merger with Compaq floundered, stock prices plunged 50 percent, and 20,000 people were layed off. Fiorina walked away with a $21.4 million severance package.

McCain Seeks Shareholders' Say on Pay
June 10, 2008

Quote:
John McCain threw a dash of populist pepper into an otherwise fairly traditional Republican stew of economic policies with his June 10 proposal to allow shareholders a vote on executive compensation. The idea, known informally among executive-pay activists as Say on Pay, put McCain into strange company: It has been promoted heavily by unions, and it was introduced in the Senate in April by none other than Barack Obama.

Obama Calls for Hearing on Bill to Give Shareholders Vote on Executive Pay
Wednesday, May 30, 2007

Quote:
WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) today sent a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Banking Committee to request that they hold a hearing on the Shareholder Vote on Executive Compensation Act, a bill he sponsored that would give shareholders an advisory vote on executive compensation and spur both increased transparency and public debate over pay packages. The legislation passed the House by a wide margin in April....

McCain is adopting Obama's proposal and holding it out as his own. Anything unusual about that?

@Debra Law,
Not surprising; he's taken on the Obama mantra of "change" to be his own. Funny, but it's working for them, because the American electorate is so stupid, and there's no cure for stupid.

@cicerone imposter,
McCain and Palin are portraying themselves as democrats who just happen to occupy the republican ticket and the republicans are applauding. They have stashed their party designation out of sight until after the election.

@Debra Law,
If the electorate had bothered to keep up with all their rhetoric and lies, they would have lost this election from the days of their convention; instead, they have gained in popularity and votes.

ISSUE: TRANSPARENCY and TROOPERGATE

Quote:
In an unusual filing with the Personnel Board on Sept. 2, Palin essentially filed an ethics complaint against herself, arguing that the state panel should conduct an investigation into whether her firing of Monegan violated state ethics laws....

Then this week, Van Flein (again assisted by O'Callaghan) filed a new motion with the Personnel Board. This one argued that, after a review of the evidence, including internal e-mails within the governor's office, the governor's lawyers had determined there was "no probable cause" to pursue any ethics inquiry into Palin at all. As a result, it argued, the previous motion for an ethics inquiry (which Van Flein himself had filed less than two weeks ago) should be dismissed.

Asked why the ethics motion had been filed with the Personnel Board in the first place, O'Callaghan said that was the "proper place" to conduct any ethics probe"and in the meantime, the governor's lawyers needed the time to review the e-mails and "figure out" the evidence relating to the Monegan firing. Now that they have done so, he said, there is no further need for the matter to be pursued. "There was no Ethics Act violation and there is no need to go forward with this," he said.

Now that Palin's own attorneys have declared that THEY examined the evidence and found "no probable cause," there exists no reason for anyone else to examine the evidence? Are we now supposed to believe that “transparency” is going to be the hallmark of the McCain-Palin administration?

@Debra Law,
This is way beyond the heads of those who support McCain/Palin; they have no clue about "conflict of interest" issues when it happens to be about their own candidates. Silly, but true. That's the reason truth and evidence has no place in this election. If they say there's no need for an investigation or inquiry, that's the end of it, because they "always" tell the truth - not.

Troopergate . . . now . . . YAHOOgate

Has anyone heard of "government in the sunshine" laws? How about FOIA? Why is Palin operating her state government through private email accounts? Highly improper! Under the alleged guise of a hacker going into Palin's YAHOO email account, she has apparently deleted her email files. I guess she doesn't have to worry about standing next to a shredder all night...

YAHOOgate

Quote:
Last week, the Washington Post revealed that Palin regularly used one of the two Yahoo e-mail accounts that was deleted today, "[email protected]," to conduct public business, and copied her husband, Todd, on some e-mails. A Republican activist in Anchorange, Andrée McLeod, has filed suit seeking to have 1,100 e-mails made public that Palin has withheld from an open records request.

McLeod calls Palin's use of Yahoo accounts for official state business "the most nonsensical, inane thing I've ever heard of." Todd Palin was often copied on e-mails relating to the Troopergate scandal, says McLeod, which nullifies her claim of executive privilege for witholding the e-mails...

Palin's reliance on personal e-mail accounts for her official duties makes a mockery of her 2006 pledge while campagning for Governor of Alaska to run an "open and transparent" administration. "Where you've got a governor apparently using a Yahoo account for state business, that's kind of a complete inversion of what ought to be happening in terms of public records," said Charles Davis, executive director of the National Freedom of Information Coalition.

Thanks to the alleged hacker, Palin deleted 1,100 documents that she otherwise would have been forced to make public in accordance with the law.

As someone who likes to work from foundational texts -- must be this raised-as-a-Lutheran, originalist thing I got going -- I like to judge candidates by their platforms. I'm not ready for my final judgment quite yet, because I haven't finished reading platforms. Nevertheless, I thought this might be a good thread in which to post links to them.

I was looking at an old thread. Here's what Armageddon posted on Jan. 23, 2006:

Quote:
"When a candidate for public office faces the voters he does not face men of sense; he faces a mob of men whose chief distinguishing mark is the fact that they are quite incapable of weighing ideas, or even of comprehending any save the most elemental-men whose whole thinking is done in terms of emotion, and whose dominant emotion is dread of what they cannot understand. So confronted, the candidate must either bark with the pack or be lost... All the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre--the man who can most adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The Presidency tends, years by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

-H. L. Mencken, July 26, 1920.

TrooperGate . . . or . . . RAPE-VICTIMgate?

I. ALASKA IS THE RAPE CAPITOL OF THE NATION

FBI crime statistics--Forcible Rape--Alaska

2006 Rate per 100,000 inhabitants 76.0
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2006/data/table_05.html
2007 Rate per 100,000 inhabitants 77.4
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2007/data/table_05.html

II. PALIN IS AGAINST ABORTION EVEN IN CASES OF RAPE

Quote:
In November 2006, then gubernatorial candidate Sarah Palin declared that she would not support an abortion for her own daughter even if she had been raped....

At the time, her daughter was 14 years old. Moreover, Alaska's rape rate was an abysmal 2.2 times above the national average and 25 percent of all rapes resulted in unwanted pregnancies.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/01/palin-on-abortion-id-oppo_n_122924.html

III. PALIN IS A MEMBER OF FEMINISTS FOR LIFE

Feminists for Life are against emergency "morning after" contraception pills and consider them as "abortion pills."

Quote:
FDA Approval of the "morning-after" pill
Comments from Pro-Life Leaders

Dr. John Wilke, Director of the Life Issues Institute in Cincinnati. "You have to talk about the physiology of this," he said. "When the sperm is deposited in a woman's genital tract, it reaches the ovary in 15 to 30 minutes. If she has an ovum waiting, she's pregnant before she gets out of bed. If she conceives, these are not contraceptives. These are abortion pills -- period," he said.

* * *

Serrin Foster, Executive Director of Feminists for Life: "Having intercourse and then using a contraception is not contraception," she said. Ms. Foster and Dr. Willke also questioned whether the pills might cause blood clots or other problems in women who use the kits frequently, or cause problems for a fetus who survived."

http://www.cogforlife.org/morningafterpill.htm

Quote:
What is Feminists for Life's position on contraception?

Feminists for Life's mission is to address the unmet needs of women who are pregnant or parenting. Preconception issues including abstinence and contraception are outside of our mission. Some FFL members and supporters support the use of non-abortifacient contraception while others oppose contraception for a variety of reasons. FFL is concerned that certain forms of contraception have had adverse health effects on women.

http://www.feministsforlife.org/FAQ/index.htm#contraception

IV. IN ADDITION TO USING RAPE KITS TO COLLECT EVIDENCE, IT IS STANDARD PRACTICE FOR MEDICAL PROVIDERS TO OFFER STD TESTING AND EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION TO RAPE VICTIMS

V. WASILLA MAYOR PALIN REFUSED TO PAY FOR RAPE KITS FOR RAPE VICTIMS

Quote:
Palin, as mayor, fired police chief Irl Stambaugh and replaced him with Charlie Fannon, who with Palin's knowledge, slashed the budget for the exams and began charging the city's victims of sexual assault. The city budget documents demonstrate Palin read and signed off on the new budget. A year later, alarmed Alaska lawmakers passed legislation outlawing the practice. . . .

Placing the city budget records, however, alongside a timetable of Palin's firing Chief Stambaugh and hiring Chief Fannon makes it clear the policy was put in place as a direct result of Palin's leadership. . . .

I was able to eventually track down Irl Stambaugh, police chief of Wasilla from the founding of the department until Sarah Palin fired him for "not fully supporting her efforts to govern." Stambaugh sued for breach of contract, but lost when a federal judge ruled that "police chiefs serve at the behest of the mayor unless otherwise specified." He later served as the executive director of the Alaska Police Standards Council.

It turns out that Wasilla did not bill sexual assault victims for the cost of rape exams while Irl Stambaugh was chief of police. As chief, he had included a line item in the budget to pay for the cost of such exams. He had only just heard about the Mayor Palin/Chief Fannon policy today, and was just as shocked to hear about it as I was.

Checking the budget confirmed former Chief Stambaugh's claim. He had included a contingency of $15,000 in his budget for the department's 1st year of existence (1993-1994), $5,000 for 1994-1995 and 1995-1996, and $13,000 for his final year as police chief in 1996-1997, spending $11,625.

Duwayne Charles Fannon, his replacement, halved the budget request in 1997-1998, with a request of $7,298, spending $3,454. However, it seems he began the "victim pays" policy in the 1998-1999 fiscal year. That year, he requested $3,000 but spent only $205. This data can be found in the Document Central section of Wasilla's website.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jacob-alperinsheriff/sarah-palin-instituted-ra_b_125833.html

This article contains links to Wasilla budget documents. We all KNOW about Palin's reputation as an eagle-eye, line-item (veto) examiner of budgets. More likely than not, she discovered that the City was paying for emergency contraception in addition to the rape kits for rape victims and withdrew funding altogether--YOU KNOW, to serve and protect the taxpayers.

Here's Palin's post hoc statement:

Quote:
Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella said in an e-mail that the governor "does not believe, nor has she ever believed, that rape victims should have to pay for an evidence-gathering test."

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-09-10-rape-exams_N.htm

Although she may not have objected to paying for an evidence-gathering test, she could not divorce the evidence gathering from the STANDARD PRACTICE FOR MEDICAL PROVIDERS TO OFFER EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION TO RAPE VICTIMS.

VI. THE STATE LEGISLATURE KICKS PALIN'S BEHIND

Shocked that the City of Wasilla forced rape victims to pay for rape examinations and kits, the Legislature enacted a law:

Quote:
May 23, 2000

The governor signed House Bill 270, sponsored by Rep. Eric Croft, D-Anchorage, outside the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) exam room at Alaska Regional Hospital. In attendance at the signing were members of victims advocate groups, law enforcement agencies and legislators.

The new law makes it illegal for any law enforcement agency to bill victims or victims insurance companies for the costs of examinations that take place to collect evidence of a sexual assault or determine if a sexual assault did occur.

http://www.frontiersman.com/articles/2000/05/23/news.txt

Here's the text of the statute:

Quote:
Sec. 18.68.040. Costs of examination and certain medical care to be borne by law enforcement agency. A law enforcement agency or other authority that is investigating a sexual assault that is alleged or suspected to have occurred within its jurisdiction is responsible for the costs of testing for sexually transmitted diseases, emergency contraception, and examination of the victim necessary for

(1) collecting evidence using the sexual assault examination kit under AS 18.68.010 or otherwise; or

(2) determining whether a sexual assault has occurred.

http://www.legis.state.ak.us/cgi-bin/folioisa.dll/me21/query=*/doc/%7Bt1108%7D?

Can there be any doubt that this law (that requires the City of Wasilla police department to pay for emergency contraception for rape victims) really pisses Palin off? After all, can't she do whatever she wants because she's the powerful mayor of Wasilla? And, why would she ever want to help another rape victim if doing so might prevent a fertilized egg from being implanted in the rape victim's womb? After all, she believes the "morning after pill" is an "abortion pill," and she would not support this for her own daughter even if she had been raped.

VII. Palin will seek federal funds to study the mating habits of crabs, but she will NOT seek federal funds to help rape victims

Quote:
GIBSON: Governor, this year, [you] requested $3.2 million for researching the genetics of harbor seals, money to study the mating habits of crabs. Isn't that exactly the kind of thing that John McCain is objecting to?

PALIN: Those requests, through our research divisions and fish and game and our wildlife departments and our universities, those research requests did come through that system, but wanting it to be in the light of day, not behind closed doors, with lobbyists making deals with Congress to stick things in there under the public radar.

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/Story?id=5795641&page=7

Palin now claims that the safety commissioner was fired for insubordination because he tried to get federal funds for fighting sexual assault cases--in the number one State for rape in the country--the State of Alaska. Why aren't rape victims more important than the mating habits of crabs? Any requests for federal money to fight sexual assault crimes against women and children could have been in the light of day--just like the requests for "crab" money.

See Palin Obstruction echoes Cheney/Rove
On Countdown with Keith Oberman

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/#26763824

Oberman noted that Palin is now claiming she fired the safety commissioner because HE was trying to raise more money for the State to fight RAPE. Oberman then stated, "I thought the excuse was supposed to be less damaging than the truth would be." But, Palin did fire Monegan a few days after she quashed his efforts:

Quote:
Critics Question Palin's Record on "Epidemic" Rape, Domestic Violence in Alaska--Effort to Tackle Sex Violence Stalled by Palin's Office, Sources Say

Evangelicals and social conservatives have embraced McCain's vice presidential pick for what they call her "pro-family," "pro-woman" values. But in Alaska, critics say Gov. Sarah Palin has not addressed the rampant sexual abuse, rape, domestic violence and murder that make her state one of the most dangerous places in the country for women and children.

Alaska leads the nation in reported forcible rapes per capita, according to the FBI, with a rate two and a half times the national average " a ranking it has held for many years. Children are no safer: Public safety experts believe that the prevalence of rape and sexual assault of minors in Alaska makes the state's record one of the worst in the U.S. And while solid statistics on domestic violence are hard to come by, most " including Gov. Palin " agree it is an "epidemic."

* * *

Some members of Palin's administration were focused on the issue of sexual violence. Officials in the Department of Public Safety were devising an ambitious, multi-million-dollar initiative to seriously tackle sex crimes in the state, but Palin's office put the plan on hold in July.

Days later, Palin fired its chief proponent. . . .

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Blotter/Story?id=5804581&page=2

VIII. WHAT IS THE TRUTH?

Let's look at Palin's initial explanation for firing the public safety commissioner:

Quote:
Palin's chief of staff fired Monegan on July 11, telling him Palin wanted "to go in another direction," Monegan said.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/29/AR2008082903598_pf.html

Monegan wanted to tackle the state epidemic of sex crimes against women and children--Palin wanted to go in another direction--Palin did NOT want to help rape victims. WHY? Is it because the State passed a law requiring law enforcement agencies to pay for emergency contraception for rape victims?

Like I said, so much for an objective discussion of the issues. Why not change the title to PRO OBAMA ONLY???

OBAMA LAUNDRY LIST OF LIES as of April 16, 2008 (76 lies and counting)

76) “I am the only candidate who isn’t taking a dime from Washington lobbyist” - LIAR- The record shows quite the opposite. According to USA Today, Obama’s campaign fundraising team includes 38 members of law firms that were paid $138 million last year to lobby the federal government, records show. Those lawyers, including 10 former federal lobbyists, have pledged to raise at least $3.5 million for the Illinois senator’s presidential race. Employees of their firms have given Obama’s campaign $2.26 million, a USA TODAY analysis of campaign finance data shows.

Source: http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-04-15-obama_N.htm

75) “I did not take money from oil companies” -LIAR- It is against the law to take money from oil companies. None of your opponents take money from oil companies either.

74) “I did not recall meeting Nadhmi Auchi at any time or on any occasion” - LIAR - But a government witness said on Monday, during Antoin Rezko’s corruption trial, that he recalled seeing Sen. Barack Obama at a party that Rezko held in 2004 to honor Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born tycoon. Two other guests at the party declared the Obamas were present at the event, which took place one week before Obama won his U.S. Senate seat.

Source: http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/rezko/894559,CST-NWS-rezko15.article

according to the Chicago Tribune.

73) Here is what Obama now said he meant about comment he made about Small town PA - “So I said, ‘Well, you know, when you’re bitter you turn to what you can count on,’ ” he continued. “So people they vote about guns, or they take comfort from their faith and their family and their community. And they get mad about illegal immigrants who are coming over to this country or they get frustrated about, you know, how things are changing. That’s a natural response.” - LIAR - See what Obama really meant in red. It does not take high school student to understand what Obama meant - “You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them…And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

72) Obama on Guns - when Obama ran for the Illinois state senate the political group, Independent Voters of Illinois (IVI), asked him if he supported a “ban [on] the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns” and he responded “yes.” - LIAR- But in what will probably be the most improbable change, the Politico reported on Saturday that Barack Obama was making a big play for gun votes in Pennsylvania. In 1998, another questionnaire administered by IL State Legislative National Political Awareness Test didn’t ask about banning all handguns, but it did find that Obama wanted to “ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.” Source: Fox News and Politico.com
71) Obama distort (aka “Lie”) about McCain saying, “McCain (he) is willing to send our troops too another war of 100 years in Iraq”. Obama also denied what he said on the video - LIAR - The video proves him absolutely untruthful (”a liar”).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-cXV4Z2Hrg

70) I did not campaign in Florida, (so Florida vote shouldn’t count) - LIAR -According to Boston Globe, HeraldTribune and other sites, Obama airs “ads” on Cable stations in Florida. Even with the Florida cable ads, Obama still lost.
From heraldtribune.com Obama’s Florida ads bust pledge

See the Video here http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2008/01/obama_airs_nati.html

69) “I stopped smoking. I stopped smoking. I haven’t had a cigarette since I quit - LIAR - But in his own words, here is what Obama said. Except….last night on MSNBC’s Hardball, Obama admitted that his attempt to wean himself from the vile tobacco weed had not been entirely successful. I fell off the wagon a couple times during the course of it, and then was able to get back on,” he said. “But it is a struggle like everything else.”

Source ABC News: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/04/obama-is-smokin.html

68) Look at my education record in Illinois - LIAR - In reality, Obama never really championed the local councils. He supported them behind the scenes and only eventually came out publicly on their behalf. When he did weigh in, he came down on the wrong side of the debate"against protecting principals from unwarranted dismissals and in favor of keeping councils independent, no matter what. In the end, the resolution of the conflict between the two sides didn’t alleviate anyone’s concerns. Instead, it prolonged a turf battle that seems to have dragged down academic progress in the years since. Read more here http://www.slate.com/id/2188010?wpisrc=newsletter
Source: slate.com

Source: ABC News: Buried in Eloquence, Obama Contradictions About Pastor

67) “I don’t think my church is actually particularly controversial,” Obama said at a community meeting in Nelsonville, Ohio, earlier this month. - LIAR - But yesterday, he told a different story. “Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes,” he said in his speech yesterday in Philadelphia.

66) I did not take money from oil companies: - LIAR - [03/31/2008]

THE FACTS: True enough, Obama does not take money from oil companies. No candidate does. It is illegal for corporations to give money to politicians. Corporations, however, do have political action committees that collect voluntary donations from employees and then donate them to candidates. Obama doesn’t take money from PACs. He also doesn’t take money from lobbyists.

But he does accept money from executives and other employees of oil companies and two of his fundraisers are oil company executives. As of Feb. 29, Obama’s presidential campaign had received nearly $214,000 from oil and gas industry employees and their families, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. Clinton had received nearly $307,000 from industry workers and their families and Republican Sen. John McCain, the likely GOP presidential nominee, received nearly $394,000, according to the center’s totals.

Two of Obama’s fundraisers are Robert Cavnar, the chairman and chief executive of Houston-based Mission Resources Corp., and George Kaiser, the president and CEO of Tulsa-based Kaiser-Francis Oil Co. Source: Associated press via Yahoo News

65) I did NOT play the race card: - LIAR - [03/31/2008] Obama was the first to play the race card. According to Phialdelphia Inquirer, Quietly, the storm over the hateful views expressed by Sen. Barack Obama’s pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, has blown away the most insidious myth of the Democratic primary campaign. Obama and his surrogates have charged that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has deliberately and cleverly played the race card in order to label Obama the “black” candidate. Read more here
