I'm going to compile an illiterate list of all the Italian I heard growing up sans spelling. You'll laugh. Some of it may be profane! But I didn't know what it meant. I wonder if you'll get it! I'll never forgive my father for not teaching us how to speak it!

I grew up on that word. Then one day I tried to figure out what it really was and was stumped. You hear it all the time on the silver screen. I always heard Marone with a rolling R and then realized recently that it could be some thing like Madonna.

I well remember my husband ordering un cornuto instead of a cornetto (croissant) in a bar on Via Settembre XX, or whatever number the street is. He has a nice deep but fairly projecting voice, used to do a lot of theater, and so his order, and then the laughs, carried the room...

Brown and chestnut/Marrone doesn't make sense in this case. I still think it might be Madonna or something else. Cornuto must still have it's roots in devils/goats horns, though.
