I explained one possible reason. I allowed that your explanation that they were stupid might be right. I could think of other reasons. Fun for lawyers for example. Periods away from students. Names in the paper.

Those might attract a certain following. Getting them known about would be important. What better than a hearing which allows editorial staff to just copy out the transcripts instead of making an effort to write something interesting.
It used to be possible to get a first-class honours degree certificate by sending £50 to a PO Box in a village in southern Ireland. The subject was left blank so it could be filled in to suit. Real class parchment. Frame it and stick it on the wall in reception and there you are.
