@okie,

oe, explain it away, fine, leftists exist, and the Democratic Party is beholden to the left, and that left has embraced Barack Obama.

Marxists exist ... Leftists constantly look for new ways to package their product, and new personalities to push their agenda.

Obama fits the mold.

Okie, I was just curious whether you saw that other thread, with the video of those radical lefty protestors in Denver who pushed a Fox News reporter aside, shouting F*ck Fox News.

I ask because H2OMan posted to it, apparently having listened to the video, and then said, referring to those protestors, "Why is the face of the Obama supporter hidden behind a mask?".

Which exhibits a weird cognitive dissonance that seems relevant here too. Because when that Fox reporter described that crowd of far-left protestors to the viewer, in that very clip, he emphasised that Obama wasnt getting any love from them, that they're done with Bush and now they're protesting against the Democrats too. He sounded really surprised about it too.

He shouldnt be. In as far as there is a far left in America, actual commies, anarchists and the like, trust me, they're not Obama believers. Neither are the ones over here in Europe, for that matter. And why would they be? In their logic, which is not really without merit, Obama and McCain are just two more representatives of the dominant, capitalist consensus, two more mealymouthed politicians who won't ever fundamentally challenge the dominant, capitalist system of the US.

@Cycloptichorn,
Kuncinich is as animated as I've ever seen him. This may be his finest hour. (While bashing Bush)

I disagree. Four years ago his "John Kerry said send me" speech was the best he ever delivered. I'm hoping beyond hope he puts that kind of effort out for Obama.

@OCCOM BILL,
OK, if he gives a barnburning speech, great. I was referring to the article Foxfyre posted, with his latest quip.

I don't care if he does for Obama what he did for Kerry. Smile

I personally don't think the Clintons wanted Kerry to win, though, and I don't think they want Obama to win. But I could be wrong.

Hmprh. Short of staying up as late as I did last night for Michelle Obama's great, enthusing and sparkling speech, it seems like I get stuck with the mediocre politicians here. The Governor of West-Virginia... yawn. Barbara Mikulsky... well, not yawn. But - how did these people get elected, I wonder? They are probably fine and hard-working politicians, but they're lousy speakers.

EDIT: Barbara Boxer was a little better. Mary Landrieu - same. Perfectly competent, but inspiring? A rallying call? More like a sermon. People in the audience applauding politely, then checking their program. They need some pepper in their behind!

Amy Klobuchar gave her combative, rally-rousing best though. Right on.

@Foxfyre,
Ed Rendell: The only green in McCains energy policies is the billions of dollars in tax breaks for big oil. And the only recycling in them is the recycling of George Bush's failed policies.

Not bad..

But then comes a numbing shopping list of numbers, targets, trends.

@old europe,
Yes!

It's Rudy here, I swear. There's a CNN logo on the screen and everything.

(Tammy! I voted for her.)

Wolf Blitzer just had a good comeback for Rudy though... Rudy was hitting the "Obama owes Hillary an explanation" drum and Wolf was like, "Obama won the nomination. He can choose who he wants. Same as McCain will choose who he wants." Rudy stuttered a bit and then allowed that McCain wouldn't have to explain.

@old europe,
Very funny, OE...If the reason we went in was purely defensive (based on realism), the only tag we need hang on the result is "wrong," not idealistic. Naive?...is that the word you're looking for? Although we were welcomed in the streets by people who were thankful...we could finance the reconstruction with revenues from their oil, and self-determination is a natural human desire.

Had we gone in with our primary goal being the idealistic liberation---I'd have to agree. Liberation was a by-product.
