I have two questions about this new site

1. Why not have a Next Post button to click instead of scrolling?

2. Why have thresholds at all? Why have thumbs up or down? Why not just have a Collapse Thread button so no one gets rated?

@Mame,
That's actually 4 questions. I just wanted to beat Gus to the punch on that one. Sorry Mame.

There actually was a next button system in the design that didn't make the launch cut.

or an ignore thread button, as i suggested in the PMS thread. don't have to eliminate thumbs down either, but reserve it to indicate disapproval.

@yitwail,
Huh? We do have an ignore button. It's on each user's profile page, right below their avatars.

@Thomas,
i hit thomas' "ignore button" and was promptly kicked into my behind !

@Mame,
Watch out - you will be accused of whining if you keep up that second question. Certainly, my inquiries into that area were received that way in other threads.

@Cycloptichorn,
I bet she won't unless she's also rude and abrasive about it. I think it's all the emoting that's off putting, not the opinion itself.

I wonder about people who join the site to play word games or that sort of thing and don't see anything or only see threads with a lot of negative clicks. Do they just go away?

When someone joins do they see all the threads or do they see that little "below threshold" message?

@boomerang,
they get the "below threshold", and while they can click it and use it they will get the message that this is the sort of thing that is not wanted here. They will then usually go someplace where they feel more welcome. Those who keep claiming that everything is still possible with the voting system miss the important point, the change is software will greatly change the culture here over time, and from what I can see most definitely not for the better. This soft wear has killed what made a2k special, and instead of preparing a2k for future greater use is will instead serve the function of killing it off. Though this will take a good bit of time to accomplish.

Which explains why hawkeye will stick around to watch it die. See, it may not seem like it when it grows over the next few years. But he's still right and the community is dead, and just won't know it yet. Rolling Eyes

@Region Philbis,
Actually it happens with any sort, and the preference for the collapse threshold is what changes that.

@Robert Gentel,
Appears, but by design far down the list, thus indicating its low standing (IE is not wanted) and as I recall the default is to collapse, which makes one feel like they are clicking on porn...again making it very clear that this is not the sort of thing that is wanted.

You can argue till you're blue about how we should go after what we want and not care about the numbers, but humans don't generally work like that. We pick community based upon were we feel comfortable, where other care about the same things that we do, we we feel valued.

I think you are projecting an awful lot. Put it this way, it certainly doesn't feel that way for me.

I'll pass. I can live with you thinking something completely different and have no particular interest in wasting that much time trying to convince you.

@hawkeye10,
Please don't use my post to validate your bizarre fears.

I don't care that much about the voting thing.

I have some unpopular opinions too, we all do, but I guess I'm able to present them in a way that doesn't make everyone angry.

So it goes.

@boomerang,
the post that i responded to indicates that you do care about voting, you cared enough to ask the question. You can try to walk away from your post now that you are aware that it ties into a point that I have been making that you don't want to hear, but you can't succeed.
