Homesexuality- a different tack.

Reply Mon 11 Aug, 2008 05:56 pm
Hello.
I was wondering if a christian could possibly answer the following for me:

Obviously christianity condemns homosexuality, but what does it actually condemn? The act of sex, or the act of love?
And by love I don't mean friendship, father/son love, comradeship, admiration, warrior bonds between men or anything similar.
I mean the sort of love that is usually found inside a relationship.
Imagine a non-consummated relationship between a boy and girl, perhaps the sort of a couple who are enaged, but between two men.
What does christianity say of this?

That's a very interesting question queenie. I mean the love the disciples had for Christ, for a start. If you take the sex out is love 'pure'? Love is so subjective in any case. I wait with interest on the different takes.

The Greeks had at least four words that could be translated love, as far as I know:

Agape = Principled love
Storge = Parental, or family love
Philia = "Brotherly Love"
Eros = Erotic love (Not mentioned in the bible)

So the love Jesus had for his disciples or the love between Jonathan and David, would not have had sexual connotations.

Sorry Neo, I never meant to infer that there was 'sexual' love between Christ and the disciples. I was thinking about PQ's question and what love is without sex. Thanks for the greek stuff - my classical education is woeful. I wish I had their confidence in delineating types of love.

I been festering on this for an hour or two...

Christianity is a very broad spectrum, and intimidates me from posting.

I can not speak for or to "christianity"

I tried

Interesting question.

It is a given that we are programed to be aroused sexually, the act of physical sex follows, then pregnancy in order to continue propagation to insure keeping the earth populated with our kind. Observe the animal world, then observe human kind.

Love is a choice.

I hardly see what religion has to do with it.

Only posted because I think Sglass is labouring under a delusion re the animal kingdom.

On a more emotional level I'd deny the power of choice in love as well. 'Heart over head' is more than a nice alliterative phrase.

I really screwed that one up. I was thinking in two different directions.

I'll blame it on the pills I'm taking for the awful dental work I'm having one.

but as ee cummings wrote "damn everything but the circus".

Let me explain, sglass. Let's say a guy sees a woman on the beach and is immediately aroused by her physical beauty. The guy thinks, "Damn, she's hot! I'd LOVE to have sex with her. Please, God, help me out here."

That's where the religion comes in. Actually, it is quite common that men mix religion and love together in this fashion.

After hooking up with the girl on the beach don't forget the praying for not getting caught and the praying for not getting the clap, or worse. And who could forget the ever popular "Oh, Jesus I'm coming"

Sex and religion are symbiotic.

Oh, and by the way, did you know that the bird that has the symbiotic relationship with the rhino is called an oxpecker?

That can be added to the "What I've learned on A2K" thread.

If I was a bird that is what I would want to be called. Oxpecker.

Cool name.

did anyone notice we are supposed to be discussing homesexuality?

now i'm thinking that's either 'whatever goes at home' or some kind of new homeopathic sex-based medicine. i don't have much experience in either and thusly i will eagerly anticipate the correct input.

We were, at one time, discussing homosexuality, but the subject has been diverted to oxpeckers...

Can you imagine having that guy hanging around you all day?

Now I know what Slappy's friends feel like.

Why did I remember oxpeckers as being white in color?

Is it possible that I have seen albino oxpeckers over the years and just assumed that was their natural color?
