A Question about Gas

Reply Mon 11 Aug, 2008 12:27 pm
No, this does not belong in the humor forum, even if it is about farts.

I occasionally get gas pains and they hurt and then they are gone.

Do they last, or can they last longer? As in days?

The reason for my question is that on Sunday morning I woke up and started my day and soon after I had this pain in my lower left abdomen. I assume that left lower abdomen = colon = gas pains

Of course, I tried everything; Gas X, walking, laying down, stretching, sitting....nothing helped. I thought perhaps that I'd have a nice little Fart Fest in my sleep last night and wake up better.

Not the case.

It doesn't really feel like gas pains (at least those I've had in the past). It's more constant and tearing like pain. It's not unbearable. It's more painful to be up and walking than it is to be sitting. Which then leads me to believe maybe I pulled a muscle. But I didn't DO anything to pull a muscle.

Is it possible to pull a muscle and not even know it?

Or is it possible this is a really big fart trappee somewhere in there that just won't come out?

Or should I just say fuke it and see the doctor? I don't want to go in for a fart but we're going on two days of this pain with no improvement.

Any suggestions? Aside the doctor of course.

Eat a nice big bowl of raisin bran.

if it's a fart that's move it right along.

and yes, it is definately possible to pull a muscle without knowing it.

I would check with your doctor. It could be one of those intestinal ballons (what the heck are they called....?). Also, you have other organs besides your colon in the body cavity. My gas pains tend to move along and hurt in different places as a day goes on. Almost never does it hurt in the same place for more than a day.

That's kinda what I thought, which is what leads me to believe it's a pulled muscle.

Call your doctors' office and get a phone consult.

They won't do that.

Gotta come in.

Did I mention it hurts more when I cough or sneeze?

Sounds a lot like the symptoms I had as a kid right before I was whisked to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. It started out on the left side and then moved to the right and stayed there for several days.

Also sounds a lot like the pains I endured a couple years ago as a huge cyst/tumor was growing on my ovary and eventually started causing intestinal blockages.

If it persists, go see a doctor, Bella. Do you feel like you're running any kind of fever, either above or subnormal temp?

No, I feel fine otherwise.

And yes, if it doesn't go away or gets worse I will see a doctor.

I just like to consult with my fine A2K doctors first.

This morning right after getting out of bed I felt better. But after moving for a bit, I am now in pain again. I haven't done anything this morning except get ready for work and get Ade ready for daycare.

But I suspect now that it is a strained muscle. What else could it be?

It doesn't feel better. It doesn't feel worse.

It is still only on the left side although last night it had migrated to the middle as well.

I know, I was just convincing myself it's just muscle strain.

I know there are about 20 different things it could be.

However, I think that it would be getting worse by now if it were an infection.

Or feeling better by tomorrow if it's a strained muscle.

I tried looking stuff up about strained muscles but there really isn't much about strained abdominal muscles.

I don't want to be a hypochondriac or a worry wart.

I don't want to visit the doctor for gas or a strained muscle that needs to just heal on it's own.

On the other hand, I don't want it to be something more serious.

I guess it's better to go for nothing than to not go for something.

It's just a pain in the arse. Or, er, stomach.

If you aren't better by tomorrow, at the very least call and make an appointment. If you are better by the time they are able to see you, you can always cancel the appointment. If not better, you won't have to wait an additional day because you procrastinated.

Thanks guys!
I know I should always call the doc when in doubt.

Just always think to come here first and see if anyone has any insight.

@Bella Dea,
Just an update.

I feel better today.

It must have been a virus or an irritation.
If it comes back, I'll be heading directly to the doc.
