My friend

A friend of mine

Is there a difference in meaning between the two phrases?

Many thanks.

Much, little or none, depending on context.

Hi Contrex

Could you give me examples to show the differences?

I think a friend of mine means one of my friends. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Many thanks.

"A friend of mine" can mean "one of my friends". It can also mean simply "my friend", without any implication that I have other friends, as in the following sentence:

John is a good man. I am proud to call him a friend of mine.
