Don't panic folks, because Bush says our country's still in good shape, and our financial system is "basically sound."

Bush: Troubled financial system is basically sound

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent 2 hours, 28 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Tuesday the nation's troubled financial system is "basically sound" and urged lawmakers to quickly enact legislation to prop up mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

He also called on the Democratic-run Congress to follow his example and lift a ban on offshore drilling to help increase domestic oil production.

"I readily concede it won't produce a barrel of oil tomorrow, but it will reverse the psychology," Bush told a White House news conference ?- his first since late April.

Yea....and what brilliant remarks have come from the democratic congress?

Here is one...

"Democratic leaders in both houses of Congress rejected the president's call, saying the move to end the moratorium would have no effect on prices and better options are available."

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a362RHmsy71s&refer=worldwide

What options might they be democrat??? When will these options provide relief democrat???

One day, you may come to realize that both parties could not care any less about solving this so called crisis. BOTH parties have had over 30 years to do something and we, the People, go NOTHING. So for you to support either party just makes you look as foolish as these idiots in Washington actually are.

Time to bail. With Bush (negative barometer) saying everything is OK, I'm now expecting a run on the banks such as witnessed currently with the major Indiana bank. Stashing gold and silver under my mattress.

You still haven't noticed it yet, but Bush screwed up not only our economy, but took most of the world with it. Bush is now suggesting we do something about "oil" that won't do any good for about ten years or so.

Woiyo wants to know what democrats can do after all the destruction Bush has metted out during the past eight years. What a dork!

Republican: We broke it, now you democrats fix it.

I'm thinking like Ragman. When your company calls a meeting to assure you there are no plans for a layoff, it is definately time to start updating the old resume.

And the best way to find another job is through family and friends; and don't say anything bad about the company you're leaving - unless they go belly-up.

That's my point in a nutshell. What a legacy he'll leave (i.e. to destroy the Republican party and the economy of USA in 2 terms). Now THAT'S talent.

Wonder what even a good candidate with a ton of experience and a good plan could do to correct this slide? I think the odds are good that Obama will get in as Prez, but what can he do to correct things with this worst economic slide in modern times ...plus a useless multi-nation war that could take years to wind down? I fear that if the prez hopeful winds it down quickly it's would destabilize the area and send the wrong message to the terrorists. Wind it down slowly and your wasting more lives and the rest of our nation's stumbling economy.

Bush, for your part in this, I hate you more than I hated Nixon and that is saying something. The rest of the blame, I distribute to the do-nothing Congressional cowards.

It's not only the do-nothing congress; it's also the supreme court that didn't do their jobs in controlling this administration as they allowed torture in our prisons and broke the FISA laws. Our democracy is broken.

the Supremes
Agreed. Fire those bastards. Was it Jefferson that wrote that there should be a revolution every 20 yrs?

Blame The Supremes for allowing Bush to obtain the reigns of Presidential power in the FIRST place. At the risk of redundancy, he never was elected by the US citizenry in the first term.

farmerman, It doesn't matter that Georgie admits he doesn't understand the economy or economics. When he speaks, many conservatives still listen and believe.

I can understand how the web of lies and progressive deceit has overtaken the administration and all the original Georgie backers are trying to keep us from recognizing that they have backed a big loser.
I recall how many threads there were that stated that GW was a moron and several A2K "true Bush Believers" would argue how he really wasnt that dumb but was just being a populist .
Well, in retrospect, I see that hes eliminated all doubts.

You are so naive. You actually think a single individual, or a "political party" is a direct cause of this current "so-called" "OIL CRISIS". You apparently have no concept of how markets and futures work, do you.

A major cause of the rise in oil prices is based on speculation in the commodities market. When Bush made his statement about drilling and how it will ONLY change the psychology, he was correct.

Bush Says Drill, Drill, Drill ?- and Oil Drops $9! [Larry Kudlow]

In a dramatic move yesterday President Bush removed the executive-branch moratorium on offshore drilling. Today, at a news conference, Bush repeated his new position, and slammed the Democratic Congress for not removing the congressional moratorium on the Outer Continental Shelf and elsewhere. Crude-oil futures for August delivery plunged $9.26, or 6.3 percent, almost immediately as Bush was speaking, bringing the barrel price down to $136.

Now isn't this interesting?

Democrats keep saying that it will take 10 years or longer to produce oil from the offshore areas. And they say that oil prices won't decline for at least that long. And they, along with Obama and McCain, bash so-called oil speculators. And today we had a real-world example as to why they are wrong. All of them. Reid, Pelosi, Obama, McCain ?- all of them.

Traders took a look at a feisty and aggressive George Bush and started selling the market well before a single new drop of oil has been lifted. What does this tell us? Well, if Congress moves to seal the deal, oil prices will probably keep on falling. That's the way traders work. They discount the future. Psychology and expectations can turn on a dime.

The congressional ban on offshore drilling expires September 30, so that becomes a key date. A new report from Wall Street research house Sanford C. Bernstein says that California actually could start producing new oil within one year if the moratorium were lifted. The California oil is under shallow water and already has been explored. Drilling platforms have been in place since before the moratorium. They're talking about 10 billion barrels worth off the coast of California.

There's also a "gang of 10" in the Senate, five Republicans and five Democrats, that is trying to work a compromise deal on lifting the moratorium. So it's possible a lot of action on this front could occur much sooner than people seem to think.

So I repeat: Drill, drill, drill. Deregulate, decontrol, and unleash the American energy industry. Those hated traders will then keep selling oil as the laws of supply and demand and free markets keep working.

Bravo for Bush. Bravo for the traders.

Obama has NO CLUE in this area and McCain is only half right.

woiyo, It's very evident you know nothing about economics and oil prices. Much of the higher cost of oil is not from "speculation" as you claim; it's based on a) demand, and b) the lower value of the US dollar.

Where did you get your "schooling?" Harvard (like Bush)?

also, the present price of oil is the result of the majors buying up and divvying at least 30 refineries in the US in the mid 80's. They hadnt even kept up with decent maintenance. Thats a crime and all admins since Reagan are on the hook.
