Democrats Are Weighing More Tax Rebates, Pelosi Says (Update3)

By Laura Litvan

July 15 (Bloomberg) -- Congressional Democrats are considering a second round of rebates to taxpayers, saying the benefits of the first checks sent to more than 100 million households this year are being eroded by rising energy prices.

``We will be proceeding with another stimulus package, and we once again hope we will work in a bipartisan way,'' House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said after House Democratic leaders met with a group of economists to discuss the spreading housing crisis and rising gas prices.

If you read the article and still have to ask, then there is no hope for you.

Which article? Kudlow's piece was a blogged opinion, not an article.

Not to mention it's factual inaccuracies...

Pelosi doesn't understand economics; the more money you produce into the economy that isn't earned creates inflation. For example, if there are only $1,000 worth of products available, but you create more money over the value of the products ($1,000), more money chases limited supplyj: inflation!

But over and above reducing the tax rates, our government must stop spending more than they take in; an impossible task for them.

For once we agree, but the Dem's solution to this problem is always to raise taxes, not cut spending.

If you just got rid of welfare, you'd probably solve the illegal immigration problem as well, as the sudden swell of unskilled labor would chase them back across the border.

cjh, You know not what you speak; just look at history. It's okay to raise taxes when everybody continues to improve their standard of living; not good when we have a Bush in the white house that trashes our economy but continues to spend like there's no tomorrow. You see what's happening don't you? Bush has created such a huge federal deficit, it's gonna be difficult for anybody that takes over the white house, and there's only one guarantee from the after effects from Bush; our children and grandchildren will be paying of "his" debt, because he doesn't want to tax the wealthy.

Under the Bush doctrine, it's okay to transfer debt to our children and grandchildren, but god save us from paying for the increasing debt as they are accrued from more taxes.

If they would get rid of the death tax, I think most people would be a lot more comfortable paying consumption based taxes.

Get rid of the income tax, property tax, and death tax, to begin with. You want to shrink government? Shrink their revenue.

All government revenue is shrinking, but not many have learned to live within their means. The CA budget isn't finished yet even though we're into the new fiscal year. What that means is that the legislators in Sacramento can't find a solution for the 16 billion short-fall in their budget; republicans don't want new taxes and the democrats doesn't want to cut spending. Because of the impasse, they'll have to pay huge interest rates on loans taken out to pay for current government expenditures. Most of the state's government employees will not receive their pay, and schools and hospitals will be without those funds until the budget is approved.

Most of the local governments in our area are struggling with reduced revenue, and they're cutting services left and right; they're somewhat in the same situation where council members and supervisors are unable to cut expenses while revenue continues to shrink. As housing values go down, so does property tax revenue. Shopping malls are scarce of shoppers, and sales tax revenue is also down. None of the government reps want to acknowledge the simple fact that all revenues are down and will remain so for at least five years into the future. The only solution is to cut expenses. They created their own problems by not living within their means and saving for a rainy day.

@cjhsa,
Democrats "can't" cut spending; without the infusion of money into banks, finance companies, and others such as public works jobs, this and the world economy will come to a standstill. If the government does nothing, more people around the world will suffer for longer periods. It's bad enough millions are losing their jobs, homes, health care, and savings for their retirement. It's up to the governments to reverse this trend to minimize the pain for the majority; that means spending money by printing funny money.
