Not exactly like asking someone who cuts there hair or cleans their teeth, huh?
Okay.
I need to find a pediatric neuropsychologist to do an evaluation.
Most of them are affiliated with the children's hospitals. We got a referral (which completely f***ed over Mo's health insurance) only to find there is about a six month wait. Not a wait for an appointment -- a six month wait for them to call you back to make an appointment for god knows when.
I've tried every other rescource at my disposal to no avail.
I've just spent hours trying to find listings of local pediatric neuropsychologists with independant practices and have found -- (ta da!) -- exactly one.
Seriously -- how does one go about finding a specialist?
"My city" + " pediatric neuropsychologist" = one hit.
That can't be right.
What search criteria do I need to use?
Any help appreciated!
Sincerely,
Frustrated, weepy, angry boomerang
boomer : is this of any help ?
PEDIATRIC NEURO-PHYCHOLOGISTS - listed by state
sure hope someone will be able to help !
even if you don't find someone close by , perhaps they'll be able to help with a referral .
is your local health-unit of any help in finding someone ?
all the best to you and mo !

You could try Canada, where there's a 6-month wait just to leave them a message which they will respond to in about 6 more months to schedule you an appointment for god knows when.
Don't know where your good universities with good med schools are there, but one of those is the first place I'd look. Past that, in Washington State.

i'm sure boomer will be very pleased to read how much synpathy you have for her in her difficult situation .
offering any kind of help or sympathy seems to be something you never heard about .

I'm just saying she'll find it here faster than up your way, doc.
I have a feeling there just aren't many of that specialty.
Here's my suggestion - Mayo Clinic.
Find an Angel Flight director in your area to find someone who can fly you up there for the visit. This is typically done gratis by a pilot who needs the hours - you have to fly to keep your ratings up.

Thank you, hamburger. That link didn't list my state but I will keep it as a reference.
I might have had a breakthrough!
This morning, after once again being stonewalled by the psychology/psychiatry department of the hospital I called the appointment maker that had been very kind and helpful to me when our doctor thought we needed an occupational therapsit.
I told her I knew it wasn't her department but that I really needed some help or advice. She is going to try to get them to expedite the appointment by treating it as a hospital referral.
Fingers crossed....
I don't think Angle Flight or Mayo (or me) think our problem is severe enough to warrent their services.
As to the Canadian plan -- you mean I would have to wait about the same amount of time, not have to spend $1,500 out of pocket on the evaluation, pay increased insurance premiums just because I'm having the evaluation done, and pay the cost of any future treatment?
Where the hell do I apply?
The hospital in question is the teaching hospital/med school here, osso, just to further warp the whole system.
Oh, great gadzooks.
I thought of Stanford, UCSF, and so on, but better at your teaching hospital, methinks, for practical purposes.
No advice--just the observation that sometimes life is just one damned thing after another.
Hold your dominion--between gritted teeth, if necessary.
My knowledge extends to the fact that T was exposed to neuropsych courses during her Ph.D. program.
That about covers it.
Well, also that Psychologists that specialize in kids are in really high demand.
I'll ask if she has any ideas, though.
Stanford is a teaching hospital, like OHSU. The children's hospital affiliated with OHSU is very highly regarded.
Thanks Noddy. My dominion is being held prisoner by a tiny terrorist right now but I hope to get it back.
Thanks DrewDad. Adding that little "neuro" to the front of "psychologist" makes things so damn complicated.
Oh, new idea.
Start calling Psychologists in your phone book and asking if they work with kids. Then start asking if they can refer you to a Pediatric Neuropsychologist.
Boomer,
If I remember right, you're in Oregon. If that's correct, here's a list of links to check out:
http://www.ohsu.edu/health/clinics-and-services/clinic.cfm?ID=13225
http://www.hearingandspeech.org/default.asp
http://www.newleavesclinic.com/resources.htm
If I remembered incorrectly and you're in another state, send me a PM or post the location details and I'll help you with the research.
From wiki:
Quote:Clinical neuropsychologists typically work in hospital settings in an interdisciplinary medical team, although private practice work is not unknown.
Maybe there is only one in town......
Heh, never mind, your post about OSHU just confirmed it. Let me know if any of those other links are helpful or if you want more.
Thanks Butrflynet -- your first link is to the hospital we're trying to get into, thankfully we don't need the oncology department though!
Mo really doesn't have hearing or speech problems although lately he has been getting really strange about noise. He loves loud music and plays the drums but lots of human voice noise makes him a little.... strange.
The staff at the last link are psychologists but I need to find a neuropsychologist -- a different sort of animal.
Mo may be a teeny-tiny terrorist, but he's retiring from his career as a suicide bomber to be a musician, instead. You've reported a lot of progress.
I don't know how big your city is....but there may not be more than one. Thay can be rare.
We're a bit over a million, and I know of two (they are friends of mine), but there may be more.
I think the asking psychologists who work with kids idea is pretty reasonable.
This place is in Florida, but the info and articles may be helpful to you during the process of finding someone closer.

It looks as if the OSHU is your best shot at something within the state of Oregon. If you need something faster than they can deliver, you may have to consider going out of state.
