Supreme Court ruling on Heller/Second Amendment to be released tomorrow between 10:00AM and 10:30AM (eastern time).

Strong indications from the court that Antonin Scalia is writing the majority opinion.

What's a "freedom hater" to do with Scalia on the job to protect our freedoms?

Next thing you know Scalia is going to be telling us "freedom haters" that habeas corpus can't be taken away by the President

This thread will be awfully fun if Scalia voted to uphold the ban on firearms.

((otherwise, this isn't terribly interesting)).

BM anyway.

Well, it's a sad day among us sane ones.
It was due to mentalities like oralloy, cjha and some other gun freaks around here that the second amendment was challenged in the first place.

The fact that four sc justices would vote against such a totally minimal bill is frightening as is the language describing self defense and hunting as motivations. The 2'nd is not there for hunting or self defense, or at least not primarily; it is there primarily as a final bulwark against governments, should they ever go out of control.

Likewise a basic right is not licensed by governments.

The prime motivation of the gun grabbers to the extent that they have anything even remotely resembling a decent motivation at all, is safety in urban areas.

But they're looking to ban or control the wrong thing. The thing which correlates most strongly with every sort of urban pathology in America is not guns but rather degree of democrat infestation. It is precisely the areas in which old-style democrat machine politics still rules and holds sway in which you find all the gang-banging and other pathology.

What we really need is democrat control.

That is not the interpretation of the constitution. Your personal interpretation is without support and illogical.

The right to own a gun is certainly a right, but far from a basic right.

Life, Liberty, the Persuit of Happiness, and Guns?

Sorry King Idiot, get in the back of the line, I think many other rights are far closer to being a "basic right" than gun ownership.

I'm just relieved that DC handgun owners may now, legally, defend themselves from each other.

Strange though, how this isn't going to make any of us any safer. Go ahead an put a bounce in your step, you don't have to live here in DC. I guess my only happiness is that I'm not in Flint MI or East St. Louis.

Ignore those gripes from the losers, guys, today we got to PARTY !!! Btw, and no offense to Jane, but most of us don't usually have to call ourselves "sane", we just hold that truth to be self-evident, same as the Supreme Court ruling Very Happy

It'll make a lot of people safer. A burglar will now always have to guess what he's walking into. "Hot" burglaries, i.e. those in which the burglar knows he's walking into a place with occupants present, are very rare in places in which people are armed; they are the rule and not the exception in places like England in which governments have disarmed the populace.

Quote:
June 26, 2008

Fairfax, VA - Leaders of the National Rifle Association (NRA) praised the Supreme Court's historic ruling overturning Washington, D.C.'s ban on handguns and on self-defense in the home, in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller.

"This is a great moment in American history. It vindicates individual Americans all over this country who have always known that this is their freedom worth protecting," declared NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. "Our founding fathers wrote and intended the Second Amendment to be an individual right. The Supreme Court has now acknowledged it. The Second Amendment as an individual right now becomes a real permanent part of American Constitutional law."

Never thought I'd see so much celebration about more deadly weapons being added to our society.

Oh well. I suppose this balances out the Boumadine decision the other day; ya win some, you lose some.

Sure it will.

It let's people know that they can defend themselves and that they can use a gun to do it.

It also tells the bad guys that more potential victims will have guns for self defense.

Everybody is safer - everybody wins.
