clapometer Show phonetics
noun [C or U]
a device used to measure the popularity of someone or something by the amount that people clap, especially on television programmes:
The audience loved his performance and the needle on the clapometer shot up.
The winner of tonight's talent contest will be decided by clapometer.

Why is the first sentence with the but not the second?

Many thanks.

Someone else will o doubt be able to explain this better, but it's because the needle shot up on a specific clapometer; whereas the talent contest will be decided by any clapometer.

They flew the kite to a victory.
