Dys
Amen

If you want better educated children than start at home when the child is born. Parents should start their, the childs, education at birth. The fact is that most are too busy to bother. They seem to think its up to the teachers.

The best president, best police officers and best politicians are those who would never want that f-ked up job to begin with..

Now I dont remember who said it.. but it was a great point.

You can fund schools with in an inch of exploding with money.
You can create as many grants as there are racial combinations
You can put a new computer every six months in class rooms and have teachers who excel at what they do

but... PEOPLE.. all the way down to the elementary school children.. PEOPLE have got to want to change.
PEOPLE have to understand that using those tools will better their life.

If PEOPLE dont get that, what does all that funding do?

You don't have Bean in school yet, shewolf, but you'll see later on that
kids are eager to learn if it is presented in a manner that is interesting
and makes sense to them. If you start out in getting them involved
and interested in academics they will continue to learn and thrive in
school.

Re: the Douglass School in Baltimore documentary that I mentioned a few pages back ... Real eye opener. More money wouldn't matter. Better teachers wouldn't matter. Out of 500 kids that started 9th grade there, 200 graduated. Only 120 were supposed to, but teachers made allowances.

If they had the books, lunches, computers, etc would they still be acting out in class, talking over the teacher and skipping class?

I hope everyone gets a chance to see it on HBO. Check your local listings.

Well, we have also a school here for underprivileged and minorities
( http://preuss.ucsd.edu/ ) and their records are excellent. One-hundred percent of the 2007 Preuss graduates will be attending two- and four-year colleges and universities.

If you tell a child he/she is no good and will never succeed then they won't!
Encouragement and believing in them can do wonders.

That type of behavior (although you will always have cut-ups) should get reigned in and under control by parents/teachers by the time a kid reaches high school. Easier said than done I know but it still needs to be said.

Parents drop the ball, no doubt. But if parents feel hopeless and not in control of a damn thing, how can they instill anything close to proper skills and ambition in their children?

Somewhere along the line, it became uncool to seek an education. Let's go back to when that happened (gangster rap? The 90's?) and start over.

as I said before.. it is a mindset.
And it is a mindset given to them by parents. One that even the greatest teacher and best computer can not always compete with

We should go back to neighborhood schools... this busing everyone everywhere to achieve racial balance for what reason I have no idea... hasn't done ****. The money saved on buses, drivers, maintenance, etc... could insure that all schools received the identical amount of necessary tools for the job.

Then give teachers enough money to make teaching worthwhile. Then stop coddling kids and tell 'em "If you want to do the work we'll help... if you don't get out... you're disturbing the kids who want to learn. McDonalds is hiring.

When I was a boy you were either college material or not. College was not an automatic. You had to not only be smart enough, but you had to work for it. If not you could take shop or vocational training. If you chose t5o be a troublemaker or a serial school cutter...... you could take your sorry ass home and good luck.

Quit lowering the bar and f*ck Junior's precious self esteem. Learning to lose is an important life lesson as well. You do the work, you get the grade. You do a little extra, you get even better grades. You don't, or you're not capable.... you don't. Just like life.

"Cept then you're buying their prison lunch instead of school lunch.

Somewhere the cycle needs to end.

I don't think that will happen until the mindset is addressed, which takes me back to what African Americans expect from Obama if anything that will actually change their lives.

Do they still offer vocational training? Shop classes? CVS was one of the largest vocational high schools in Chicago (and perhaps the country) and I understand now that it's become a school for bad kids. That's amazing to me. At one time and for a long, long time, if you went to CVS, that was saying something. Now I guess it saying something else.

Obama can't offer any more than any other Democrat can. But, he will be in the system, at the helm. (Hopefully, he will get elected).

I disagree. there are a lot of high school dropouts... or the "shop kids" who lead productive lives. They struggle more and have less but that's how it works. I don't think that dropping out or not doing well in school necessarily leads to prison.

Sure, there are people who expect Obama to make life easier for them. But those people are always looking for someone to make life easier for them and i believe that Mr. Obama is very much aware and will address this particular group or groups sooner or later. And like Bill Cosby, he's gonna take a hit from those who just don't want to hear about being independent and self-sufficient, but he's laying the groundwork now with his talks on race and personal responsibility. He knows what he's got to do for ALL Americans, I'm sure.

I have hope, as foolish as it may seem. Very Happy

I would not go as far as to say that just BECAUSE he is black, he will make a difference for black people.

I think he will make a difference for everyone ......because he is not bush.

He acts like at least, that he gives a **** about people.

But, I am not leaning on any one candidate yet. so that is as far as I will go.

I just do think it is unfair to expect different things from him -just- because of his skin color. He is.. after all.. still a human ya know..

I sorta agree with BPB on this; I've seen too many Hispanics in our area who are hard-working, and working in most of the service industries. I dare say that most of the construction workers during our remodeling have been Hispanics, and they not only work hard, but do quality work.
