This is the shade-type decoration which is hung above the priest(,) who leads the ceremonies. In ancient times in India, when royalties and nobilities were going out, the valets would hold and spread the parasols over them. This story depicts the origin of the canopy(,) which is hung above the image (statue) of the Buddha, and later on it became a design with the big-lotus flower symbolizing the Buddha's power. There are several types of base(s) such as quadrilateral, hexagon and octagon with many fine decorations.

1. Are the commas within the brackets needed?

2. Should it be 'bases' or 'bases'?

Many thanks in advance.

This should be, "when royalty and nobility were going out." Better still would be, "when members of royalty and the nobility were going out."
