Indeed.
He really turned a very weak character and terrible mistakes into a stalwart defender of much that was good and important, I think.

I learned to revere him in later years.
I didn't know him in his early years, but from what I observed over the last couple of years, he was a really good senator with a good heart for the poor and needy in this country.
