I'm no admirer of Edison, and i don't really care who was first--however, it is worth noting that the original purpose was not a sound recording, and that the "sound recording" was only retrieved by using technology not available at the time the recording was made. To my mind, that makes this claim dubious.

The "First sound" website has a downloadable mp3 version of Au Clair de la Lune.
