Modern medicine can be wonderful. You and your family will be in my thoughts.
It can also be frustrating. This all started with some redness on her back and abdomen last Friday night. By Saturday morning, it concerned Nee enough to take her to the local GP clinic. I was at work, and Nee called me from the doctor's office to tell me that we had to take her to the hospital. Since Nee's english is not spectacular, I asked her to let me talk to the GP, who subsequently refused to take the phone off her. I left work, picked Nee up from the bus stop near the clinic, and we went to the emergency department. We were quickly moved to the paediatric observation room, where we subsequently waited for 4 hours before she was examined by a doctor. By this time her skin resembled a half ripe tomato. The doctor took her temperature and a urine test, concluded that the emerging rash was "nothing sinister", and sent us home. By Sunday morning, her face had begun to swell up, so we went back to the emergency ward, where it was another 3 hours before we saw a doctor. We went through a couple of physicians. At least the lead on this day seemed a bit more on the ball. She concluded that the symptoms did not fit any meningococcal infection, but that they needed to get some blood, and start a line to get some antibiotics into her. It was just before 6:00pm (we arrived at 10:30am), after 2 failed attempts, that they finally got a drip going, and told us that she would be admitted. I went home to get her some clothes at 6:30pm. It's now 10:00pm on Thursday night. Nee's been at the hospital since 10:30am Sunday morning. She's an amazing woman.
