Unsure if the intention was a Mctag smackdown or humour on Yoong's part.

Doesn't matter both are funny. as was mctags independant adjudication.

I mean, seriously... a Scot adjudicating an English grammer case is just ludicrous.

Diners have to till 2 p.m. before the restaurant opens/is opened for business.

Either verb form is okay, but there is a long-standing rule of style that says one should avoid passive-voice verb forms when possible. A passive-voice verb reflects action back upon its subject. As in "the restaurant is opened."

"...before the restaurant opens..." reads slightly more smoothly.

By the way, I's take out the word "to." It sounds like an incomplete verb form.

And, the "before" is pretty awkward.

Why not recast the sentence so that it reads like this:

Diners have to wait until 2:00 P.M. for the restaurant to open.

I don't think you need "for business," because, if diners are going to visit the restaurant, they will be there for eating meals, the preparation of which is the restaurant's business.

I's made an error in line five of my post. "I's" should be "I'd." Sorry.

Yes, 'wait' was inadvertently left out.

It seems the other members didn;t spot it.

Miklos, if you spot an error, and no-one else has posted since your last post, you can amend it by using the EDIT facility.

We spotted it all right, but we knew what you meant. I did, anyway. Smile

I'm very careless. I spelled 'didn't' wrongly.

Hi Mc Tag

I agree with you. Typos can be ignored if you understand what the poster is asking.

...but if you make another post apologising, by so doing you destroy your chance to edit the mistake away.

Yesterday I read an article by an editor of the UK's The Guardian newspaper, who said they had a policy of never "wiping" errors in the online version of the paper, rather they leave them exactly as they are, and place a correction underneath, clearly flagged.
