I checked out the map shown below, seemingly supporting the argument that the proposed Mosque is not actually super close to Ground Zero, but it is pretty close actually. If I am not mistaken the mosque site is the little red square north of the purple highlighted Ground Zero. I think the entire Manhattan area around Ground Zero should have some special zoning considerations applied to it. It seems logical to me that what existed there prior to 9/11 should have some grandfathering in perhaps, such as existing churches, but no new ones now, and anything new needs to be compatible with the historical significance of the area including and immediately surrounding Ground Zero.
Actually, the mosque problem is pretty simple, just move it somewhere away from the area that should have special zoning now. Since Islamic folks say it is not a monument to 9/11, then it should not matter at all that it is moved somewhere else away from it, after all why would they want to invite controversy any more than the relatives of 9/11 for example that especially object to it being built there? Simple move it, and problem solved.
