Okay, here is maybe a clue. The teacher is a thirtyish woman who lives with her 2 younger sisters and widowed father.

Actually, eoe is correct. Tortilla Soup is a remake of the 1990's film that I was thinking about.
"Eat Drink Man Woman" (1994) was remade as "Tortilla Soup" in 2001.
