I never saw Magnolia, so I didn't realize the Jason Robards character (that's who Philip Seymour Hoffman nurses, isn't it?) was a producer.

Back in a while with a new question.

Perhaps I should have said ex-producer.

From IMDb:

Magnolia is the study of nine lives in one day in San Fernando Valley, California. These nine lives all connect and revolve around the game show "What Do Kids Know?"(WDKK), where a team of three kids play against adults and everytime the show is on, there is a new team of adults and the kids remain; if they won the previous game. Earl Partridge (the late Jason Robards) produced "WDKK" when it was first on in the late 60s. He is dying of brain and lung cancer and is being taken care of by Phil Parma (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a male nurse.

(I really liked Hoffman in that role.)

I'm going to take a wild guess here because he's the first actor that came to mind. But, I don't think it's the right answer because although the missionary lusted for Sadie Thompson, I don't think he cared about other women.

Anywa, would it be Walter Huston?

1. a song and dance man - Yankee Doodle Dandy

2. an automobile tycoon - Dodsworth

3. another preacher with an eye for women - Rain

Walter Huston is right, and so are the first two movies. After I posted the question, it occurred to me that you might think of Rain for the third, but the movie I actually had in mind is the one that is sometimes jocularly referred to as "Lust in the Dust" (although, now that I come to think of it, he might have lusted only for the Jennifer Jones character in that one.)

"Duel in the Sun" was my first thought, but I wasn't sure he felt lust for Jennifer Jones. However, he certainly had a glint in his eyes as he eyed her low cut blouse and advised her that it would be wise to dress more conservatively. Laughing I almost put that movie down as my second choice for the preacher.

New question. (Oldie) This character actor was:

1. The Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam

2. A con artist on a cruise ship

3. A sadistic small town doctor/surgeon

Charles Coburn

1. Knickerbocker Holiday (tie-in to Walter Huston, who played Peter Stuyvesant in the stage version)

2. The Lady Eve

3. King's Row

I'm glad to hear that, mac. I taped it but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I saw her in A Prairie Home Companion last week, and thought she was wonderful. Liked the movie, too, even though I'm not a big fan of the radio program.

Oh, good, glad to hear you liked the movie. I'll probably see it this weekend. (I was never a fan of the radio show either.)

Hi Mac. Very Happy Danged if our power didn't go out last night. Just long enough for me to miss Meryl Streep. How's the weather doing in your neck of the woods?

You got it bree. And, of course, it was Walter Huston that made me think of Knickerbocker Holiday.

I'm fresh out of ideas for a new question. Would you want to start the new game you suggested a while back (the one where we pick a theme beginning with a letter of the alphabet, from A to Z, and name 20 movies per theme)?

I'm game. Let's give it a try.

Let's see if we can name 10 movies that fit a particular subject/theme running through the alphabet.

Example:

A = Air

Name a movie/or movies that have a connection with "Air" (aviation, space, etc.) - (Name as many as you like)

After we name 10 in the "air" theme, we can start with "B" i.e.:

B. Baby - or a subject that someone chooses. Haven't figured out how to decide upon who's to choose. We can iron out the kinks as we go along.

C. Color

D. Disasters , and so on and so forth.

I'll start.

A - Air

1. The Spirit of St. Louis

1. The Spirit of St. Louis
2. Flight of the Navigator
3. Independence day

4. Apollo 13
5. The Right Stuff

6. Only Angels Have Wings
7. Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines

Since we haven't yet established a procedure for deciding who chooses the topic for the next round, may I step out of line and call dibs on the letter "B"?
