I did order some Garbo stamps on the day they were available last month.

Nice Henry Fonda stamp. He was a hunk in his day, wasn't he?

That's a nice picture of Henry Fonda on the stamp. Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart were the All-American boys fighting for justice and honor, etc. ,etc., etc. until Fonda shocked all of us oldtimers by playing the villain in "Once Upon A Time In the West". I detested him in that movie. After seeing him in "Young Abe Lincoln" as a kid, I thought he would make a good President. Very Happy

I don't have any Garbo stamps as I'm not a stamp collector, but I'm still holding on to some Cary Grant stamps that a friend gave me. I haven't the heart to put him on an envelope where he might get that handsome face stamped with a messy ink pad.

Hi Raggedy! How've you been? Where are you hanging out these days?

I have no problem slapping Garbo on my bills. Very Happy I just get tired of flag stamps, so it's nice to have some others.

I'm doing fine, except for having a new roof installed (UGH), Mac. And how are you? Oh, I'm here every morning posting birthdays and pics on WA2K. Two more months to go.

Today I posted a pic of the lovely lady who at one time advertised my favorite perfume.

Is your new roof almost done? What a pain that would be!

raggedy,

Henry Fonda was good as a villain in "Once Upon A Time in the West". I did not like the gruesome crime his character committed. However, the screenplay was written by Bernardo Bertolucci who later made very grim films as a director.

Mac: At the rate the work is progressing now, I may have a brand new roof over my head by 2006. Something to look forward to in the new year.

Wandeljw: I most certainly agree Fonda was very convincing as the despicable villain in that movie, but I personally am glad that he was "honest Abe" for 35 years prior to that role. Very Happy

And, today's birthday celeb who advertised Chanel No. 5 is:

There was a Chanel ad of Catherine with her hair pulled straight back that was gorgeous. This is not it, but it was probably take at the same
time.

Continuing our Garbo discussion: I walked past the Gotham Book Mart (a legendary bookstore on 46th Street) yesterday afternoon, and was amazed to see that their entire front window is filled with about 20 or 30 old movie magazines (Photoplay, Silver Screen, etc.) on which Garbo appeared on the cover. I'd love to know where they found all those old magazines, and what they'd fetch on eBay.

I wish I had had a camera with me, so I could have taken a picture to show you guys - it's quite a stunning display.

It sounds wonderful. Thanks for telling us about it!

I'm sure you're correct - it must be a very valuable collection.

Yes, thanks for telling us Bree.

I could kick myself for cutting up all the movie magazines I collected over the years. I have kept the pictures in acid- free sheet protectors in binders, but I believe collectors want the magazine intact. Answering an ad in Movie Collectors World Magazine, my daughter and I went to Rhode Island 10 years ago where we purchased 100 or more 40's and 50's magazines from a man who was left his sister's collection when she died. All were in excellent condition. I still have around 30 of those magazines uncut and one of these days I'll give E-Bay a try. And who knows, there might be someone out there on E-Bay who is interested in just the pictures. I've got 300 binders full of movie magazine portraits. We also purchased around 200 magazines (which have since been cut up) at Larry Edmunds bookstore when we were in Hollywood, but none with Garbo covers. They are rare.

(When I see "no picture available" beside a name at IMDb, I'm tempted to tell them I have one. )

I saw Capote today. What a great movie. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was born to play the role.

I agree, mac -- I thought Capote was one of the best movies I've seen this year, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman gave an incredible performance.

I saw a very different movie today (I'm taking Fridays off for the rest of the year, since I have the vacation time, and find a 4-day work week so much more appealing than a 5-day week): Wallace and Gromit and the Curse of the Were-Rabbit. If you've seen any of the Wallace and Gromit shorts (The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave, and one other whose name escapes me at the moment), you'll understand why they make me smile; if not, it's impossible to explain, so just go see it.

I'm familiar with Wallace & Gromit, and their new film is on my short list. Very Happy The short of theirs I remember best is one where they build a rocket and go to the moon.

Oh, and I love your Friday plan!

I only have six and a half vacation days left for the year and I figure Tgiving & Xmas will take most of that, so I'm hanging on to them.

We do get a personal day (which can be split into two half days) for each two month period. I like to save mine if I can and use them at the end of every other month. I worked half days last Friday and today. My coworkers were grumpy about my good planning...

A W&G virgin? Oh boy,are you in for a treat. Please, please, please watch the films in the correct order,A Grand Day Out,The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave,to appreciate the advancement of the "clay-mation" process used to "move" the models. It`s similar to the stop-motion used in the Ray Harryhusen/early King Kong films. On a good day, they get two seconds of film time in the can.If memory serves me,they worked on Were Rabbit for around 5 years.
Also look out for Creature Comforts, not a W&G film, but a series of shorts based around zoo animals but done on a one-to-one interview situation.Well worth tracking down.As is Cracking Contraptions, where Wallace,an avid inventor, tests his "contraptions" on poor old Gromit.
Enjoy Very Happy

Thanks for the info, Barrymod. If the opportunity ever arises that I might see some W&G movies, I promise I will watch them in the correct order. Now, I'm very curious about them. Smile
