Thanks to your tip on the birthday boy, I just finished listening to the first side of Ella Fitzgerald's "Cole Porter Songbook" (I bought it so long ago, I have the LP, hence "first side"). One of the songs on that side is "Too Darn Hot", which is very apropos for today! (mac probably thinks we Northeasterners are a bunch of wimps who do nothing but complain about the weather -- first it's too cold, then it's too hot -- and maybe we are, but it's awfully icky here today!)

I don't dare call y'all wimps. I could never take your winters. Very Happy

(Heat index is currently 85 degrees here. It's 9:30 at night! The sun's been down for over an hour! <sigh>)

Thanks! As soon as he said it, I knew it would be my new signature.

By the way, the last one was "How can ignorance be compared to bliss." I don't think we ever talked about it - did you recognize that one?

I didn't recognize it -- you mean, you didn't make it up?

It's a line from a song from a musical. I like it even better in context...

"I snarl, I hiss: How can ignorance be compared to bliss?
I spark, I fizz for the lady who knows what time it is.
I cheer, I rave for the virtue I'm too late to save
The sadder-but-wiser girl for me.
No bright-eyed, blushing, breathless baby-doll baby
Not for me. "

You could knock me over with a feather. It never dawned on me. Oh, and speaking of dawn, I'm watching "Before Sunset" right now. Lovely scenery - I guess you've both seen it firsthand - the scenery, that is.

I was going to use Michael Caine twice for "Too Late Now" and "Too Darn Hot", but thought that might be too confusing. Smile

Me neither!

And you're right -- using Michael Caine twice would have been way too confusing!

What can I say? I was going for subtle! Very Happy (I could have credited Meredith Willson, but I enjoyed having it out of context too much.)

Very Happy Mac.

I listened to these three songs today. We've asked this composer before, but I don't think we've asked these songs.

Edward Everett Horton (two words from title) + Tom Cruise (one word
from title)

Bob Hope (three words from title) + Meg Foster (one word from title) + George Clooney (one word from title) + Kevin Kline (one word from title)

Marilyn Monroe (one word from title) + Greer Garson (one word (erase one letter) from title)

I'll have to look at this question over the weekend - I couldn't set aside what I was doing this afternoon, because picking up my train of thought on Monday morning would have been too difficult!

Happy weekend!

Cole Porter:

You're the One (Edward Everett Horton) + Top Gun (Tom Cruise)

Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number! (Bob Hope) + Future Kick (Meg Foster) + Out of Sight (George Clooney) + I Love You to Death (Kevin Kline -- nice, the way you worked him in there!)

Let's Make Love (Marilyn Monroe) + Julia Misbehave(s) (Greer Garson)

Yes to everyone. Very Happy

I have to google to find out who was singing those numbers on my tape (DMX never gives the names of the performers).

I also have to check out the girl in "42nd Street " which was also on the tape (she sounds like Tammy Grimes). I recognized Jerry Orbach.

And indeed she was Tammy Grimes, assuming you were listening to this:

42nd Street cast album

That's another one I have on LP (I can never get rid of my turntable!). The credits on the back of the album say, "and introducing Wanda Richert" (she played the role Ruby Keeler played in the movie). According to www.ibdb.com, Wanda Richert appeared in only one Broadway show after 42nd Street -- she was a replacement in the original production of Nine -- and that's it. I wonder what happened to her.

NEW YORK POST
Approx July 1982

Lisa Brown, who steps into "42nd Street" replacing Wanda Richert Aug. 2, is shown revving up outside the theater yesterday. Lisa's debut date will coincide with her 28th birthday. This charmer hails from Kansas City.

Unknown Newspaper Source
1982

CRASH! Director Gower Champion was afraid she wasn't good enough at tap dancing, whereas Wanda Richert (**who he was sleeping with) "tapped before she was born." Wanda got the lead, Gower died opening day, and Lisa Brown bit her lips and remembered: "Everything happens for the best."

Lisa switches to the soaps. Becomes a star on "The Guiding Light," playing a nasty seductress, marries co-star bandleader Tom Nielsen from Milwaukee at Little Church Around the Corner.

David Merrick attends. He and Wanda Richert have differed, and he gives leading role to Lisa finally.

"Somebody gave us a crockpot for a wedding present. When I leave for the TV job at 7am, I fill it with makings of a stew." Her bridegroom Tom picks her up at 11pm and they're off.

One night they'll surely run into Wanda Richert, now also in the soaps, scheduled in the closing days of "The Doctors." Lisa says again: "Everything happens for the best"--"And there's no biz like show biz."

(Maybe, she's still on a soap.)

Oops. I deleted the second part. Seeing double tonight.

I don't know about that detective work. That article was 23 years ago. (lol)

And now, I'll say:

Goodnight lady
Milkman's on his way
Sleep tight lady
Let's call it a day
And listen to ..................
