14? That makes Gary Cooper look like a piker by comparison. This will take some searching.

Thanks for the clue -- it was a big help. I've got 15 movies (15-1/2, if you count "Dakota") for

John Wayne:

North to Alaska
The Fighting Kentuckian
In Old Oklahoma
In Old California and California Straight Ahead!
Lady from Louisiana
Wyoming Outlaw
Three Texas Steers, Texas Terror, The Lucky Texan, and Texas Cyclone
The Oregon Trail
'Neath the Arizona Skies, and Arizona
The Man from Utah

Good for you. I counted Dakota, but I didn't count those classics, Texas Cyclone and California Straight Ahead.

Did High and Mighty lead you to John Wayne? I loved that movie when I first saw it. I don't recall it ever having been on TV.

Yes, High and Mighty was what led me to John Wayne. I don't think I've ever seen that movie.

I have to beg off for the time being -- I'm disgustingly busy at work.

Hi guys, this has been a hell of a week. Why is it always that in a short week you really feel like you paid for that day off (except bree who doesn't get President's Day off--just one of the transgressions of her job!)? Crying or Very sad

Anyway, caught up today, finally. Fun format and interesting discussion, as always, on films. I did indeed love Million Dollar Baby; I guess I'll get to Aviator-sounds like if it's to be viewed were best to be viewed...bigly(?)-but I may take a pass on Sideways. Men behaving badly with not much redeeming value just doesn't do it for me, esp. when they lack the charm of a Grant, a Niven or a Colman!! Anyway, I saw so little I'll be surprised by everything!
Shocked

Sooo, I thought I'd jump in with an incredibly odd and silly addition of opposites! Laughing

So the titles will be one or the opposite. In this case:
This guy is illuminating (5 times), or totally in the dark (2)! He was also quite the neighborhood bird! [additional clue]

got it?

HI Loislane. Nice to see you back. Clever question and another good idea.

hmmm. Let's see if I'm on the right track:

Errol Flynn??

Illuminating:
Charge of the Light Brigade
Green Light
Another Dawn
The Dawn Patrol
The Sun Also Rises

Dark:
Footsteps in the Dark
Edge of Darkness

Neighborhood Bird - Adventures of Robin Hood (My Man Very Happy )

And so she does!!

I'm glad you got Charge of the light brigade! I almost did it very Cyrano: a light answer electrical vs. light answer natural!

Your ball, Aggie! You can try opposites or whichever game!

This is great. We've got three ideas to work with now. Bree's "Common word in titles", Loislane's "opposites" and the "clue" format.

I do have a "clue" question ready, but I prefer to wait until we hear from Bree because it's really her turn. Very Happy

Oh, do please go ahead if you've got one, Raggedy!

Last night I went to hear Tonya Pinkins in concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The concert was great (she did an all-Harold Arlen program, in honor of this year's centennial of his birth), but what was almost even better was the room she performed in: the Allen Room, which is on the fifth floor of the new Time Warner Center, and which has floor-to-ceiling windows that provide a spectacular view of Central Park South and the park itself (currently snow-covered and "Gates"-adorned). It was the first time I had been there, and I felt like I was inside the set of an Astaire-Rogers movie!

Just to add the cherry to the top of the sundae, at about 8:45, an enormous, golden, almost-full moon cleared the tops of the buildings on Fifth Avenue and hung over the park. It was very funny to see an audience of blase New Yorkers start nudging each other and saying, "Is that the moon? Look at the moon!"

Dam Sam, anyway. I guess the photographers were just too busy focusing on the room.
It is breathtaking.

I'll be back with a quickie question before I settle in for the Oscars.

5 movies:

The General held the audience in the palm of his hands ( they were captivated ) while he recounted his adventures in Italy on Carnival Day, but when he told them that the trip didn't cost him a cent as it was financed entirely by outsiders, they began to suspect something fishy about the whole tale.

Gregory Peck:

MacArthur (the General)
Spellbound (captivated)
Roman Holiday (Italy on Carnival Day)
Other People's Money (financed entirely by outsiders)
Moby Dick (something fishy about the whole tale)

Yes to Gregory Peck and all the movies, Bree. Your turn.

So, did you all enjoy the Oscars?

I thought the Oscars were pretty boring: no big surprises among the winners, no memorable acceptance speeches, and no outrageous fashion statements. My favorite moment of the evening was probably Jeremy Irons's ad lib about the noise that sounded like a gunshot.

I'll try to post a new question later today. It would be nice if the office closed early, since a snowstorm that's supposed to start around noon is expected to drop about another 8 inches of snow on us. However, I fear that's a futile hope, so I'll probably be here all day.
