I was just making up the list for fun. If I ever arrive at the final version, maybe I'll post it.

Thanks for the reminder about the Golden Globes. I'll probably watch the first hour, and then switch over to PBS for the last installment of He Knew He Was Right on Masterpiece Theatre, since I liked the first part so much.

I'll think about your question while I'm running around doing errands this afternoon.

Back with a new question tomorrow.

Boy, those first two Golden Globes awards (for Closer) were a surprise, at least to me!

Golden Globes is being taped upstairs on my VCR. There's a James Bond Marathon on Encore and I'm taping and watching the Sean Connery films downstairs. I can't resist Sean. Very Happy Goldfinger is on now.

Oops, sorry if you were hoping to be surprised about the Golden Globes winners!

When I was at my sister's at both Thanksgiving and Christmas, there was a James Bond marathon on a cable channel called Spike. It pretty much became our default channel -- whenever there wasn't anything we wanted to watch on any other channel, back we went to James Bond. Between the two holidays, we managed to catch most of Goldfinger. I don't think I had seen it since I saw it in a movie theater when it first came out.

No surprises for me, Bree. I haven't seen a movie on the wide screen for at least six years. But, I love to see the stars and the film clips and to take a wild guess at who's going to win.

As for Bond - I watch Bond to watch Sean. When my daughter was in her early teens, she and I went to a candy store in the city, filled up three bags, and settled down to a double feature (reruns) of "Dr. No" and "From Russia with Love "at the "big" theater in town. I don't whether it was the candy or Sean, but whenever a Connery Bond movie is on, she reminds me of that "special" day. Very Happy

Love to hear what you all have to say about the Golden Globes. (I haven't seen all of it yet.)

I only watched the first hour of the Golden Globes, so I missed most of the major awards. I thought it was interesting that, in the movie drama category, top honors were split between The Aviator (best movie) and Million Dollar Baby (best director, Clint Eastwood). Hard to know what that portends for the Oscars.

Our next actor has played:

Real-life novelist (twice)
Real-life newspaper editor
Real-life U.S. president
Real-life gangster

Oh! I just saw your question. I was going to use an actor who fits all those descriptions with the exception of playing a novelist "twice". He did play an author in a TV production though. Back to the drawing board.

The second novelist role is pretty obscure. He only wrote one novel that's at all well-known. And as far as I can tell (I never saw the movie), the role he plays in the movie has more to do with another aspect of his career than it does with his writing career.

As far as I know, this actor never played a playwright in a movie. But one of the movies in which he played a real-life novelist is mainly about the playwright with whom the novelist had a long relationship. That novelist (we'll call him Novelist #1) wrote novels in a particular genre, and many of his novels were turned into movies.

The other real-life novelist this actor has played (Novelist #2) wrote a novel which has been turned into a movie at least three times. The most recent movie version of his novel won an Oscar for best picture.

Novelist #1 fits the actor I have in mind, but he also played a playwright in a movie.

I can't find Novelist #2 for my actor. I'll put him out of my mind. I thought we were on the same wavelength.

Oh, I'll tell you who I had in mind. Jason Robards, Jr.

Thank you for the clues. Very Happy

Raggedy, you had the right actor in mind. So if you go back to him, now it's just a race between you and mac to see who figures out the movies first. Meanwhile, I'll go back to imdb and see if I can figure out when Robards played a playwright.

I had:

Real-life novelist - Julia - Dashiell Hammett
Real-life newspaper editor - All the President's Men - Ben Bradlee
Real-life U.S. Pres. - Legend of the Lone Ranger
Real-life gangster - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

I still don't know the other novelist.

My next question was going to be:
Playwright - Act One - George S. Kaufmann
or movie director/producer - Melvin and Howard
and the Pres. and Novelist
