I'm not sure that Barrymore played a Shakespearean actor, Wandeljw.
And, it's the actor that the questioner has in mind that we have to guess. I'm now thinking Boris Karloff, but I can only find two of his movies that fit inasmuch as the prosecutor is a real person. I'm trying to come up with some sensible guesses so that we can have another clue. Laughing

Well, I was thinking Karloff, and then of course, Basil Rathbone...but I'm not sure about the Inventor there.

Strangely, I had thought of Rathbone, too!

Now to think about Raggedy's question...

My clue was very accurate though, don't you think? (I am still feeling proud of myself.)

Strangely, Rathbone was on my thought list, too. (LOL)

But, even stranger:

I just put on TCM and John Barrymore is reciting Hamlet's soliloquy from the movie, Playmates, which is described in the TCM movie guide as "A bandleader (Kay Kyser) enlists a down-on-his-luck actor (John Barrymore) to teach him Shakespeare.

Is that non-causal synchronicity, or what, Bree?

(Oh, and I think that's the first time we've had two actors that fit the bill for our occupation category. )

Wandeljw: If you hang around here for awhile, don't be surprised if strange coincidental events, for want of a better explanation, occur. Very Happy

Wandeljw: I posted before I saw your post. Laughing I think your question was great. It was the clue about "genre" that gave it away.

In my opinion, Raggedy validly answered my trivia question twice.

Hi Wandeljw: I don't want to ask 2 questions. I just thought it was funny that the Barrymore movie was on TV today. Very Happy

I asked this question yesterday.

Fictional actor
Real-life lawyer
Fictional detective
Comic strip character

I don't know if a "comic strip character" is the same as a "comic book character" -- if there's a difference, the third guess is off the wall (they probably all are), because I don't think Batman is a comic strip. But I'm desperate for a clue, so here goes anyway:

Walter Matthau (Mr. Wilson in Dennis the Menace)
Warren Beatty (a comic strip character and a fictional detective in Dick Tracy)
Jack Nicholson (The Joker in Batman, and a fictional detective in Chinatown)

Good guesses. But not who I have in mind. I'd have to say comic strip character. I have never seen a comic book in which this character appeared with his raggedy friend. (However, I'm not certain about that.)

This actor also played a well-known classic fictional character.

That didn't help: I keep coming back to Peanuts (either Linus or Pigpen would seem to fit), but I don't think there's ever been a feature movie based on the comic strip, just TV shows. I also thought of Andy Capp and Calvin and Hobbes, but no movie versions there, either.

I'll sleep on this and see what I come up with tomorrow.

The fictional character is really quite seasonal.

That's character #5, right?

Yes, the seasonal character is No. 5.

I might add that this comic strip character has not only appeared in a movie, but also radio and Broadway.

Well, the only seasonally-named character I can think of is Maxim de Winter, and I'm reasonably sure Olivier never played a comic strip character.

And the only comic strip character I can think of who has appeared in a movie and on Broadway is Li'l Abner, and no one in the cast of that movie fits the bill.

This time I really am going to sleep on it!

I'm going to bed, too. I am feeling like a Raggedy Ann instead of Raggedyaggie.
