Raggedy - sorry, I can see that what I said was confusing. I didn't mean that Burt Lancaster's character in Judgment at Nuremberg was a judge at the Nuremberg trials; what I meant was that his character had been a judge (and legal scholar) in Germany during the war, and in fact he was on trial at Nuremberg for having collaborated with the Nazis in his judicial capacity. Based on that, I know it's kind of a stretch to say that he played a judge in Judgment at Nuremberg, but it's the best I can come up with.

Like you, I tend to think of Jim Thorpe primarily as a football player, but it was the fact that he had played semi-pro baseball before the Olympics that cost him his Olympic medals (before they were restored), and after the Olympics he went on to play major league baseball for several seasons.

WOW. Excellent information, Bree.

Now, all we need is a "Count" and we're on our way.

And, if it is Burt, the next question is deservedly yours. Very Happy

loislane17 has advised that she'll be offline for a while (until tomorrow, it sounds like), so I guess we'll just have to wait for her to come back and let us know if we're right about Burt.

Raggedy, if we're right, I think the next question should be yours, since you're the one who thought of Burt Lancaster, and without that head start I never would have thought of the other roles. But of course, it remains to be seen if we are right.

OK, I've got an easy one to ease me into this!

An alcoholic

loislane,

bree and raggedyaggie came up with Burt Lancaster:
"Come Back Little Sheba"
"Field of Dreams"
"The Leopard"
"Judgement at Nuremburg"

because of their shyness, you will need to decide who goes next.

Actually, my choice for the movie in which he played a baseball player was Jim Thorpe: All-American (she said, not shyly!).

So until we know whether we're right, and in order to keep the game moving for any/all interested players, I will bend the rules and permit an interim question. So, Wandelj, if you have a question, go for it, and if Burt is not correct, we'll set your question aside.

I do hope I've made a satisfactory decision. Laughing

Sounds satisfactory to me -- I hope that, when I check in again tomorrow morning, we have either a new question or a resolution of our old one!

Interim Question:

prosecutor
prince
shakespearean actor
inventor

(bree and raggedy did all the work on the solution to the last question but then got into a silly dispute about which one of them was more modest. they let me take the next question because i am not afraid to look arrogant.)

Good Day!

Might it be John Barrymore?

Prosecutor - States Attorney
Prince - Rasputin and the Empress
Shakespearean actor - He played an actor in The Great Profile, but don't know if it was in the Shakespearean vein -
or, if you mean an actor in a play by Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet would fit the bill
Inventor - The Invisible Woman

I'll check back in several hours. Have errands to run.

You may have arrived at a second valid answer. The shakespearean actor role in my question was an integral part of the story. I am thinking of an actor other than John Barrymore.

Are you thinking of a real-life Shakespearean actor (like John Barrymore), or a fictional character who was an actor who played Shakespearean roles?

bree,

the role was a fictional shakespearean actor. only the prosecutor role was based on an actual historical person.

Thanks, that gives me something to think about while I'm out at lunch (trying to avoid the hordes of Christmas shoppers).

I'm back folks, and you're correct although I'd thought of one slightly different film:
Alcoholic-Separate Tables
Count-The Leopard
Baseball Player - Moonlight Graham/Field of Dreams
Judge-Judgement at Nuremburg
Now that I think about it--except for Count, (which he nearly is at the end of the film) all of the others are Ex something=Judge, ballplayer, Alcoholic!

Now it took a village to get the answer, so I'm fine with whomever goes next.

Well, I'd like to try Wandeljw's...Whenever I think of Prince, I must admit I think of:
Ronald Coleman
Prosecutor-Tale of Two Cities
Prince-Prisoner of Zenda
Shakespearean Actor - A Double Life
Inventor - (a stretch, as he's a medical researcher and I can't remember, oooo, I may have another answer, but this should get us a clue!)
Arrowsmith

loislane and raggedy,

both of you came up with actors that also seem to fit my question.

i was not thinking of either Barrymore or Coleman.

is there a rule in this game that allows more than one valid answer?

Well, mine is wrong because Sydney Carton wasn't a real prosecutor (and actually a defender!). So I'm out! But I think we deserve a clue or two since both of us came darn close iwth 3 guesses!

CLUE:

The actor I am thinking about played diverse roles at the beginning of his film career but soon became linked with a single film genre.

raggedy,

only the prosecutor was based on an actual historical character.

the prince, shakespearean actor, and inventor were all fictional characters.

your John Barrymore answer was very good. is it possible to have more than one valid answer?
