Bree: That is a most alarming article, and not just alarming, but tragic. I feel sad.

It is very sad. And what's almost as sad is that a work-related crisis just came up, and I may not be able to think about your question today.

Giving the new question a gentle yank forward so it doesn't get lost.

Real-life Naval Commander
Fictional Naval Officer
Real-life actor
Real-life composer (twice, that I'm aware of)

Hey come on! It's nearly Noell Coward! Here's what I know for sure (A2K'ers will put me right on the 'not sure' ones)

Noell was a composer - Mad About the boy, Mad Dogs and Englishmen

Noell was an actor - In Which We Serve, playing something high up in the navy

Not sure......but almost (fuzzy on the details):

He was in the Armed Forces.......I think it was the navy

He's an author and playright. Smile

Just tryin to play

Very Happy And I love it that you're playing, Sarah. Noel Coward's a fine choice, but he just doesn't fit the bill. All the roles I'm referring to are MOVIE roles. This actor played a :

Real-life Naval Commander in a movie and a real-life actor in another movie and a real-life composer in two movies.

I was thinking maybe George C. Scott, but, no doubt I'm wrong.

My Mum was an extra in Paton though.

Welcome to the game, Deep.
Not George C. Scott. Don't think he ever played a real-life composer.

I'm stumped, so to get a clue, I'll guess three actors who have each played a real-life composer:

Cornel Wilde (Chopin in A Song to Remember)
Dirk Bogarde (Liszt in Song Without End)
Paul Henreid (Schumann in Song of Love)

hmmm. Should I have said songwriter instead of composer when I "yanked" this thread forward?

No more yanking around here. He played a songwriter/entertainer in two movies and he got an Oscar for one of them.

I actually noticed the word "yank" in your first post, and thought it was an odd choice of words, but somehow I never put two and two together. I should know better by now!

Jimmy Cagney:

http://www.hirschfeldart.com/newsitelg/cagney.jpg

Real-life Naval Commander - The Gallant Hours (as Bull Halsey)
Fictional Naval Officer - Mister Roberts (tie-in to William Powell)
Real-life actor - Man of a Thousand Faces (as Lon Chaney)
Real-life composer - Yankee Doodle Dandy and The Seven Little Foys (as George M. Cohan)

"Composer" is a perfectly good word for George M. Cohan. It crossed my mind to wonder if you meant a classical composer or a popular songwriter, but I don't think it would have helped if I had known the answer.

Yes to James Cagney and all the movies, Bree. I can't remember whether we used James Cagney before. I posted a reply around midnight, but since it's not here, I must have made an error or Confused

Have you got one for us?

I think we may have used Cagney before, with different movies. But I may just think that because I know I've thought of using him before.

Let me see what I can come up with for a new question.

Sarah, three guesses are usually required before a clue is given. Just guess anyone who comes to mind (who knows -- you might guess the right actor!).
