Yes, those are pretty bad.
So how are you feeling? (I may have a root canal in my future too.)
I'm feeling good, thanks. The doctor gave me a prescription for a really strong painkiller (Vicodin, which I think is what Matthew Perry was addicted to), which I took for the first two days, but I didn't need it after that. The worst part was having to eat soft, mushy food for a few days -- living on a diet of soup, tapioca pudding, and mashed potatoes got old very fast. I go back for the second (and last) visit on Monday, and I assume it'll be the same routine again for a few days after that.
Oooh. I'm glad I stopped in before my shopping trip and lunch today. The concert sounds wonderful, Bree. Now I can reminisce about Astaire songs during lunch. I remember "The Piccolino" in Top Hat - not the words though. Great story. Funny! The sing along part sounds great.
Did Andrea sing "They Can't Take That Away From Me"? (The Barkleys of Broadway and "It Only Happens When I Dance With You". (I just recorded that number onto DVD.)
Margaret Whiting - she brings back great memories. Baby It's Cold Outside with Johnny Mercer and Old Devil Moon and oh so many more.
Glad to hear you're feeling better. Darn shame you had to have the root canal just when your friends were arriving.
Yes, she did sing "They Can't Take That Away From Me" and "It Only Happens When I Dance With You". (How could she not? They're both such great songs!) For some reason, the latter was the one that kept going through my head for the next couple of days. Thankfully, it wasn't "The Piccolino"!
The night after we went to the show, we had an early dinner and then came back to my apartment and watched Shall We Dance (which I had taped off AMC back in the good old days when it was commercial-free), so we got to hear Fred sing "They Can't Take That Away From Me", and "Slap That Bass", both of which Andrea also did.
I've never seen "Shall We Dance", but it will be on TCM one of these days soon and I'll try to catch it. I read in my 1991 Music Encyclopedia that "They Can't Take That Away From Me" was the only George Gershwin song ever nominated for an Oscar. That's hard to believe.
It would be great if Andrea M. would record the Astaire songs. I might have more luck. I'm still waiting for Amazon to get her other CDs in stock.(lol)
Gershwin would probably have had a few more Oscar-nominated songs if he had lived past the age of 37.
I don't know if Andrea's Irving Berlin CD, "Always", is one of the ones you have on back order at Amazon, but it includes several songs from Astaire movies: "Top Hat, White Tie and Tails" and "No Strings" (both from Top Hat), "Let Yourself Go" and "Let's Face the Music and Dance" (both from Follow the Fleet), "Change Partners" (from Carefree), "You're Easy to Dance With" (from Holiday Inn), and "Steppin' Out with My Baby" and "It Only Happens When I Dance With You" (both from Easter Parade). Oddly, I don't think she's ever done a Gershwin recording.
Good point about Gershwin, Bree.
Yes, I ordered:
What Is Love
I'll Be Seeing You: Love Songs
and
Always
Excellent choices! Now if only Amazon would get on the ball and ship them to you...
Yes. I ordered the CDs on August 9. Now the estimated delivery date is between Dec. 12 and Jan. 9. This is the first time I've had a problem with an order from Amazon. (Amazon: Are you listening?)
I ordered a book from Amazon in July and they just keep delaying the delivery date. I think that they'll just keep doing that until I give up and say never mind.
Does Amazon charge your credit card before they ship your order?
No, they don't charge you until it ships.
hmmm. I wonder where "stock" is located, when they say "out of stock".
Amazon doesn't charge me until the order is shipped.
Well, that's a relief!
I know this is heresy, because A2K benefits when A2Kers order from Amazon, but I've always had better luck ordering books from Powell's or alibris (on the rare occasions when I can't find what I'm looking for at an actual bricks-and-mortar store here in NYC). I've never ordered CDs online, though, so I can't suggest any alternative sources.
I think "out of stock" sometimes means "out of print."
I know it's Bree's turn, but I thought I'd sneak a slightly sneaky one in:
Real-life writer
Brain Surgeon
RAF flight commander
Parisian hat designer
Riverboat Gambler
I'm glad you stepped up there, Raggedy -- who knows when I would have gotten around to it? Let me think about this sneaky one...
Oh, very nice!
Danny Kaye played a real-life writer in Hans Christian Andersen, and all the other roles (maybe a real-life writer, too? I can't remember) in
(I have to admit, I went to Google for help in solving this one).
Danny Kaye is the man. I just saw The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Hans Christian Andersen the other day on TCM. He was a cowboy in Mitty, too. I thought the movie might be too old hat this time around and was surprised that I enjoyed it , and Hans Christian Andersen, just as much as the first time I saw them.
Did you walk around singing "Wonderful Copenhagen" after seeing Hans Christian Andersen? Every time I hear that song, I can't get it out of my head for days.
