In Holland, every time there's an election, we have this online gadget called the Kieswijzer (which translates as "Choiceguider" but also "Vote more wisely"): you fill out a survey and they tell you which party fits your views best. It's been there every election since back in, I dunno.. 1998 or something, and it's HUGELY popular: something like 3 million people used it last time, on a voting population of something like 8 million (I'm not bothering looking up the numbers now).
Other, less popular, sites like it have of course popped up since, and other countries have followed suit. Germany had a good one that was very popular as well, same in Belgium, etc.
In the US, I've seen a couple of general political tests that give you such a survey and tell you whether you are more conservative / liberal / libertarian whatever. I also remember two tests I've seen that will recommend a specific candidate to you after you complete the survey. One pretty consistently sent you to the candidates at the more extreme ends of the spectrum (Kucinich was a big hit). Someone here, I think it was Craven, pulled that test apart pretty thoroughly.
The other, on a major network news station (CNN or NBC or something) is pretty much a dud. The multiple choice answers on each question are mostly just talking points from the different campaigns, so you can easily tell which one represents which candidate, but more importantly, many of the answers overlap or are not directly comparable.
But heeeeere isss:
The Electoral Compass USA
Produced, incredibly, by those crazy Dutchmen. Partners in the project include the Free University of Amsterdam, the country's third largest newspaper, De Volkskrant, and public television's current affairs program Netwerk.
Do the test, let us know what your results were, and what you thought of the test!
