Java is basically a cross platform programming language that lets developers create programs that will run on different operating systems like Windows, Apple OS, Linux, etc.
It's required for java based programs like you'd find in bank and credit card account sites, live graphics as Rockhead mentioned, etc.
It isn't necessary for sites that are mainly for reading text, and you won't usually find it in news sites, unless they have some kind of active statistics, like stock prices, although this kind of information is being presented more and more through Adobe Flash.
Thanks again, InfraBlue.
Good to learn this sort of thing without reading endless pages of (sometimes confusing) technical information.
OK, looks like, for my purposes, I can do away with Java then!

I deleted mine some time ago...for the second time...it is a very big program, and I am short of space.

Ah, thanks Deb.
Right, it's gonna go then!
I'm not sure how I got it in the first place, actually ... and I keep getting these update notifications which was was unsure about following up.
This has been helpful.

My Quicktime player (also a space hog) seems to be performing some of the functions of Java.
If/when you get faster access, if you want to do things like online banking you may find you want Java.
Thanks jespah & everyone else for the helpful information & advice.
I sometimes think some sort of ongoing "information of luddites" thread could be a very helpful thing for those of us who are technically challenged in this area. Somewhere where a person might not feel too silly for asking the questions in a clunky sort of way & receive assistance from patient, helpful people.
When my computer geek was here last month, he installed java. It helps me get into games that wouldn't open for me. Who knew? Certainly not me or you.
MsOlga, how much RAM do you have.
Expanding it can help digest a bit...

um .... how exactly do I find that out, Rockhead?
(This is a very old computer & I suspect it is not long for this world, so ...)
I was wondering that too..
Luddite #37, here.
Weird that I was a lab technologist in early life, and not a bad one if I do say so I shouldn't, but even then, I learned what I needed at the time, and never went off searching the wilds of spectrophotometers, etc.
Depends on your operating system, but...
My computer
System information on XP pro... (I have 768 on this box)
Always start with my computer, and go sniff around.
Again, I am a caveman...
RH
Not to worry, Rockhead.
Thanks for trying, though!
My next Luddite question, if I may:
How do I send a group email without revealing all the recipients' email addresses? I know there's a way, but I've never had reason to do it before.
Back later. (On the run this morning.)
Thanks in advance,
Olga
place the recipient name in Bcc (Blind carbon copy)
In outlook express
click on the "TO" button
Single click on the recipients name then click on Bcc
You can also paste a list of recipients into the Bcc box using right click, and choosing paste from the drop down menu
Thank you, dadpad! (again!)
I will give it another go tonight.
Wish me luck!
OK, another question, if I may:
Some years ago (when I knew absolutely zilch about these things) I was advised to use (free versions of) Ad Aware & Spybot, after experiencing problems with my computer. (Thank you, Craven.) My question is this: what are the basic "must haves" these days? (I have Trend Micro PC-cillin
Internet security.)
@msolga,
OK, I'll re-word that last question: with all the new wizz-bang additions to internet security programs available now, is there still a need for the extras like Spybot, Ad-Aware, etc? (Remember this question is coming from a Luddite, OK?

But I'd really like to know!)
