Mac help/can't install new printer, don't remember passwd

The fellow who worked on my computer last, a year or more ago, may have changed the administrator's (my) password, but if so I don't have it. My earlier passwords don't work.
The printer company (Brother) has a solution, which is to use Mac OS X install media.

Quoting -
Mac OS X install media can be any form of media that contains Mac OS X installation software, such as the DVD discs or USB flash drive that came with your computer. (I know have Mac OS X 10.6.8; he's the one that installed that.)

Huh? Doing any of that scares me..

I have a call in to the guy, but who knows when he might answer or if he can help. He's good, but very busy.

@ossobuco,
You can reset a password a number of ways.

restarting with the DVD is the best way and then use the resetpassword option

For Lion/Mountain Lion

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.

@parados,
I don't have the DVD as he threw the upgrade in at no charge. But in the meantime, he just called, and it turns out he left the admin password blank on purpose and is sure that will work. I'm having a beer before I try it..

First of all, I'm glad I could even reach him - he works at a PC place and works on his own on the side. Plus, he was really helpful the last time but that was quite a while ago. If blank won't go through as a password, he'll help, I'm sure, even if only giving me the dvd to do what you were saying.

Thanks for responding, parados, appreciate it.

@ossobuco,
Hope it works.

There are other ways to change the admin password without a DVD but they are a little more complicated.
