I don't think that quid pro quo applies, there is not necessarily an exchange going on. Those who bash Americans, and those who bash the English or the French, cannot necessarily be said to be motivated by the slurs of their opposite numbers. There are any number of people in the world who are happy to bash Americans (or the English, or the French) without having themselves been the target of the vituperation of those whom they would condemn.

These jokes all suck. Except the ones about how stupid americans are, of course. They are all spot on.
