That isn't necessary if people don't pretend ignorance when they know full well what is meant.

(Or are you going to tell us that you've never heard the word "rhetoric" used in this way? Remember that you've taken part in lots of discussions here in A2K where the word has been used many, many times.)

I have seen nothing to suggest that the US and UK care whether or not the UN is embarrassed in any of this. (And I prefer it that way.)

Its not the UN but the US and in particular the UK who will be embarrassed should they fail to get a second resolution.

Bill

I think you might be right there. George II is not the sort of person who feels embarrassment.

Well, Turkey may be off the menu. Reports now surfacing indicate a sudden increase in the activity of the troop flotilla intended for Turkish deployment. The vessels appear to be making ready to go to sea, as opposed to making ready to discharge their cargo and debark their troops.

Imagine some American viceroy in a postwar Iraq trying to cobble together a government out of warring Shiite and Sunni Muslims, secularists and Islamist theocrats, while holding at bay ambitious Iranians and Turks and damping down the territorial ambitions of independence-minded Kurds. And all this while controlling -- largely for our own use, influence and economic benefit -- Iraq's huge oil resources.Washington Post page A19

Needs (not) a lot of imagination, doesn't it?

When the US tells the UN inspectors to leave Iraq, that's when it will begin. c.i.

I wouldn't be surprised if the announcement of the capture of bin Laden's no.2 was a tactical diversion to draw attention away from the Turkey debacle.

Its not been a good few days for Bush. First Saddam co operates by destroying missiles, something we have been demanding he does, but when its done Bush dismisses it as a meaningless gesture! (You can't have it both ways).

Then Chirac receives a rapturous welcome in Algeria.
The NSA mislay an embarrassing email blowing the gaff on the threats and bribery to buy the UN vote.
Thanks to the Turk's inability to count, there's going to be no northern front (how long does it take to sail tanks from Turkey to Kuwait?)
The weather window is beginning to close. Bush must be starting to sweat. Good.

Vive Chirac. Vive la France!

Why should the US and UK be "embarrassed" if others vote against them? That's just how these bodies work.

If anyone stands to be embarrassed, it is those who stand against a proposed solution, should that solution work. To my knowledge, only the US and UK are proposing a solution to the Iraq problem.

Just a passing thought; maybe Turkey is getting the idea that with a suitable diversion on the southern flank of Iraq, she may be able to cheaply waltz in and grab the Kurdish portion of Iraq and the odd oil field.

That's a cheap shot considering the ally Turkey has been in the past, but the thought has been crossing my mind lately.

roger, it has been noted somewhere that I have traveled today that US and Turkey forces may meet somewhere in the northern wastelands! What happens then?
